Over the past two weeks my relationship with spiders has completely transformed.

I went from dreading opening my mailbox - where a two-inch arachnid stood guard - to marveling at its intricate web, thriving within just six inches of space.

That first encounter sent me to Google: “What is the meaning of a spider?”

Turns out, these small yet mighty creatures symbolize creativity, patience, balance and interconnectedness - lessons that apply far beyond nature.

So, when I began designing a custom Leadership Workshop for The Goddard School Charlestown on team cohesion and communication I knew this theme had to weave its way through.

Just like a spiders web, the strength of a team lies in its connections. When every thread - every individual - is aligned and working towards a common goal, the whole structure becomes resilient, adaptable and cohesive.

These qualities fuel performance, collaboration and meaningful results.

Coaching helps teams pause, reflect and intentionally strengthen those connections. It gives teams the tools to communicate effectively, build trust and create a healthier, more sustainable web.

25 minutes.

That’s all it took to experience a breakthrough and change the trajectory of their lives.

As part of the The Conferences for Women, I had the opportunity to coach eight incredible women on a variety of topics including managing imposter syndrome, finding purpose, stepping deeper into Leadership, increasing work/life balance and navigating a career pivot.

I’ll admit, at first I was weary of the short amount of time, but I quickly grew to love the format. The sessions were focused, efficient, highly engaging and full of personalized reflections.

What if…

Have you ever paused to reflect on the “what if” statements you tell yourself?

What if I fail?
What if they say no?
What if no one likes it?
What if he/she leaves my team?

These are just a few examples of what I hear from my clients.

Typically our “what if” statements are focused on the problem, worst-case scenario or concerns about what will go wrong as opposed to the positive possibilities that can also come to fruition.

You see, there are two sides to every “what if” statement that can be explored.

With self-awareness, a pause and conscious choice, you can focus your “what if” statement on hope, encouragement and positivity.

What if I succeed?
What if they say yes?
What if people show excitement?
What if he/she stays and contributes even more to the team?
What if this gives another member of my team the opportunity to step-up?

Can you feel the energetic difference in each side of the “what if”?

As you go about your day, recognize the statements you’re telling yourself.
Choose to play in possibility.
Notice the impact that choice has on your confidence, creativity and actions.
Watch the ripple effect of it in your interactions and relationships.

Changing employers isn’t always the solution to boost happiness at work.

Although there are instances where making a switch may be necessary (i.e. toxic culture, limited career advancement, compensation), in many cases there are things within your control that can increase your work satisfaction like…

👉 Delegating tasks.
📅 Scheduling focus time for yourself.
⏲ Proposing a new meeting time that works for your schedule.
🤝 Asking for help with prioritizing tasks.
🗣 Communicating your needs to your manager.
⏳Setting realistic turnaround times on deliverables.
🚫 Reducing the amount of times you check your email after work hours.
🏖️ Taking a vacation.
💻 Shutting down your computer at 5pm to enjoy the evening with family, friends and/or your loved one.
💌 Waiting 24 hours to respond to emails.

If any of the above examples made you cringe at the thought of doing it, then coaching could help you.

That body cringe or immediate “I can’t do that” reaction tells me that you have thoughts about prioritizing your needs and speaking up about them (I see you people-pleasers).

First comes a decision, then the shift to commitment.

Selecting what you want vs. being dedicated to what you want are two different things.

Anyone can make a decision but commitment requires consistent resilience over an extended period of time.

Commitment is about:
🗓️ Prioritizing what’s most important everyday amidst busy schedules.
🎬 Practicing new habits despite discomfort or doubt.
🔎 Executing the task at hand while connecting to the bigger purpose.
📈 Evaluating the truth of today and identifying what to change.
🎯 Maintaining discipline and focus throughout the journey.

Commitment is a daily choice.
Every day our choices compound and generate momentum.
Over time experience is gained, confidence builds, habits are formed and new results are accomplished.

This week one of my 1:1 coaching contracts ended.

It was the culmination of four months focused on increasing her confidence and leadership skills as she transitioned from an individual contributor to a management position.

In our last session we spent time reflecting on her progress, celebrating her accomplishments and setting her up for success as she transitions to integrating the tools, techniques and insights she learned during our partnership on her own.

While it’s normal for transitions to spur a mix of emotions including fear, sadness, self-doubt and excitement they are an opportunity to experience new beginnings.

Prioritizing connection.

This past week I traveled to Massachusetts and moderated a 2.5 day Leadership Workshop. 15 employees from across the world came together to share successes, openly discuss challenges and explore new ways of approaching processes, platforms and talent to drive success in 2023 and beyond.

At the end of each day I asked attendees to reflect on the day and share insights. Their responses were all related to soft skills.

The importance of communication, cultivating trust, being heard/seen, relief that there was more alignment than anticipated, feeling supported and having one anothers back.

It was a beautiful reminder that revenue goals, new product launches, campaign deadlines and dashboards are a product of creating a safe and collaborative culture that allow employees to share their voice and do their best work.
