Woohoo! New running kicks from via as a bday gift from my in-laws. โค๏ธ๐Ÿ‘Ÿ๐Ÿ˜

This was after a failed try w/the Zelenโ€™s. Really wanted eco friendly but ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿป:
1) The toe box was funky fitting compared to other Xero Shoes. Plenty of space in front of the big toe but other toes jamming into the front of the shoe ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿป;
2) The upper (mid foot) had too much going on;
3) The inner toe box had rough inner edges & added to the above mentioned discomfort;
4) Minor unfinished edges on the upper for shoes that run about $130. ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿป

So sent them back, sat on it for a few days while researching LOTS of other shoes.

Finally came back to Xero Shoes, specifically the Prioโ€™s but ordered from REI:
1) Iโ€™m an REI member & get free shipping;
2) REI basically has a no questions asked return policy (they even resell worn shoes with the condition noted);
3) I had previously considered Prioโ€™s & the HFS. In the end, Prio won due to REI carrying it & kept coming back to it, clearly;
4) Toe box fit is on point w/other closed toed Xero Shoes I own & use: Hanaโ€™s & Mesa Trailโ€™s ๐Ÿคค;
5) Nothing weird/over engineered like the Zelenโ€™s. Only minor qualm is a thick piece of fabric at the bottom of the laces;
6) Prioโ€™s just exude Xero Shoe-ness w/the huarache influenced tightening system visible on the outside, minimal, zero drop, natural foot shaped. The Zelan I felt tried to be another brandโ€™s shoe plus Xeroโ€™s, & in the end had an identity crisis. ๐Ÿคช

Next day wore them to & from the office on my run commutes. Definitely noticed the slight increase in insole as well as notable upper, but overall very familiar feeling & awesome to run in on road & trail! (Had been running in an old, really worn pair of Hanaโ€™s, which were super minimal & lots of ground feel, ha! ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿป๐Ÿ˜†)

Happy Running! โœŒ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ˜Š

(Note: I am a โ€œXero Heroโ€ but never formally announced that awesome relationship. ๐Ÿ˜ Also have been an affiliate for a while, but clearly donโ€™t hold back w/reviews. Also provided above to Xero Shoes Support & asked them to pass it along to R&D. ๐Ÿ‘)

๐Ÿ› Stopped for a swing push and play for a bit. J, R, & G-ma joined, who were walking and not far behind, joined up and stayed with E.
๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿป I then headed out for a solo-venture. Ended up looping into town, Davidson, and then heading back.
๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป Threw in a short walk and walking lunge break to stretch out the legs and feet, before continuing the rest of the way back.
โ˜บ๏ธ Went for a total of 7.42 mi round trip, which felt good to go longer.
๐Ÿ‘ Good hit out all in all! โค๏ธ๐Ÿ˜Š

Family hike on Mt Jefferson โค๏ธโ˜บ๏ธ

Parked at the top picnic area. From there hit up the summit and Luther Rock and then looped back, all in 1.5 miles. Definitely an easy going one for and with the kiddos. Plus nice secluded picnic tables, at the end, with an awesome view from which to enjoy lunch.

All in all a nice day out for a hike! ๐Ÿ˜Š

Especially considering rain was forecasted every other hour. Ha! ๐Ÿคช

So tweaked a tendon in my right foot weeks ago. In turn, was off running for a while. Just started to feel better. Then tweaked a different tendon yesterday also in the right foot. ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿป๐Ÿคท๐Ÿป๐Ÿคช So was feeling it today but just kept it really easy, especially on the downhills. Weโ€™ll see how it feels in the morning but fingers crossed not too bad/sore. ๐Ÿคž

Also questions to you all:
1) I was planning to do another info series on running blues. Though wanted feedback on whether youโ€™d find that helpful or on another topic?

2) If another topic, what do you want to hear about? โ˜บ๏ธ

Do you have to completely stop running for a few months? Not at all! I know when I donโ€™t run, my mental sanity is definitely challenged. An offseason is meant for de-structuring your running, maintaining a base, and allowing your body some freedom to rest. Two months tend to be a good amount of time to take it easy, and also allows time to reflect on your previous training and what to focus on next.

Races are a huge stress on your body. Youโ€™re pushing yourself to the edge of your limits, and youโ€™ve just gone through months of ramping up mileage and continuously stressing your body. Photos from a recent local run on the Boone United Trail. Definitely been a while since my last run, ha! But overall, I felt surprisingly good. โ˜บ๏ธ That said, definitely took a walk/hike break hear and there on the flats in the top loop. Ran all the uphills (and down) except for a few technical, rocky, short uphill sections where I couldnโ€™t find a good cadence. So opted for safe versus pushing it and landing on my face. Photos from recent vacay to Disney World. Havenโ€™t been running much since the birth of our 2nd kid. Although it had forced an โ€œoff seasonโ€ of sorts. To which I always recommend 1-2 months off from running once a year. Though once I do get more running back into the schedule, the next Common Mistake fits in well.

So back to the 10* Common Mistakes Runners Make that land them with Overtraining Syndrome

How quickly is too quick to increase your mileage? The general guideline is around 10%** every week. So your mileage for this week is 20 miles? Next week should be no more than 22 miles. Is this a hard and set rule? No. But stick to it and youโ€™re less likely to experience overtraining.

**The 10% volume increase as โ€œstandardโ€ actually does not have an origin. It may be somewhere to start. However increasing/decreasing/staying the same mileage is very specific per runner week over week and their goal(s). So it will vary depending on a number of factors. Feel free to reach out with questions. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜Š

Photo from our first hike as a 4-some, and Rโ€™s first, to Crab Orchard Falls. ๐Ÿฅฐ Not exactly a rest day, but then again weโ€™re taking any chance we can get to move our bodies with a new little one in the mix. Ha! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿคช๐Ÿ˜†

I mentioned rest days as it plays into our continuation of the 10* Common Mistakes Runners Make that land them with Overtraining Syndrome

Just because youโ€™re not running doesnโ€™t necessarily mean youโ€™re allowing your body to rest. If youโ€™re on your feet all day dancing at a concertโ€ฆ you arenโ€™t resting. If you go on a huge spring cleaning spreeโ€ฆ you arenโ€™t resting. If youโ€™re playing a 3 hour game of flag football with the kids, this may be admirableโ€ฆ but you arenโ€™t resting. Rest on your rest days! If youโ€™re feeling antsy, go for an easy walk, bike, or something to take the edge off.

Photo from my morning run up and down the Boone United Trail on Howards K**b. Beautiful sunrise this morning! It was cool seeing more of the sunset as I ran higher up the mountain. As if I was running up to meet the sunrise before anyone could see it in our area. ๐ŸŒ„ โ˜บ๏ธ It was also a shorter run than usually, granted with a lot more vert. After 2 weeks off from running, due to our new bubs, it was a nice hit out versus jumping back in with too much too soon.

This plays into our continuation of the 10* Common Mistakes Runners Make that land them with Overtraining Syndrome

I hope you realize by this point in these posts (and if your read the article) that more is not always better. Just enough is always better. Sure you want to show up to race day prepared, and you want to push your body on a consistent basisโ€ฆ but you need to train smart not more.

Surprisingly, one of the hardest aspects for runners to learn is how to run slow. Either they donโ€™t believe that itโ€™s doing them any good, or they havenโ€™t quite figured out how to physically make their legs slow down because theyโ€™ve never done it before! Iโ€™ll say it again, though. Easy days are meant to be easy!
