A Fitness Journey Series: Let Us Help You Get Active
June 2026 - A FITNESS JOURNEY SERIES FOR AND ABOUT THE BONNER SPRINGS YMCAโS ACTIVE ADULT COMMUNITY
Employee Spotlight - Sarah Srock
As told to Justin Brantley,
Hi, my name is Sarah Srock, 46 years old, and I am the new Associate Executive Director here at the Bonner Springs Family YMCA. I have been a member for nearly 30 years and an associate for more than 20 years.
I have been physically active for as long as I can remember. I grew up playing sports and even became a Golden Gloves boxer. However, it wasn't until my early 30s that I truly began to appreciate movement and the impact it has on my overall health and quality of life.
My motivation shifted from simply being active to valuing what movement allows me to do every day. Staying healthy and active has enabled me to compete in races, build a career, raise three beautiful daughters, recover from surgeries, dance with my husband, and fully enjoy life's experiences. For me, the journey isn't just about exercise, it's about maintaining the ability to live life to the fullest.
Exercise makes me feel strongโboth physically and emotionally. As a runner, there's something freeing about hitting the pavement and letting my mind wander. Running gives me the opportunity to clear my thoughts, relieve stress, and focus on the present moment.
Exercise has become my therapy. It helps me process challenges, recharge mentally, and often sparks some of my most creative ideas. Beyond the physical benefits, movement gives me energy, confidence, and a sense of balance that carries into every aspect of my life.
I continue on this health and wellness journey because I have experienced the benefits firsthand. Staying active helps me remain strong, healthy, and capable of keeping up with the demands and joys of everyday life. Movement is not just something I doโit's an essential part of who I am and how I care for myself.
As I continue to age, I want to look back and be grateful that I invested in my health when I was younger. The choices I make today are helping me build a future where I can continue to live independently, stay active, and fully enjoy the people and experiences that matter most to me.
Itโs important to set realistic expectations for yourself and remember that healthy habits are built over time, not overnight. Find forms of movement that you genuinely enjoy, because you're much more likely to stick with them long-term. Most importantly, view movement not as a fad or a temporary solution, but as an investment in your overall health and well-being. Every step you take today can contribute to a healthier future.
I have been fortunate to have support from so many people throughout my journey. My family and friends have been a constant source of encouragement, and I am also incredibly grateful for the support of my colleagues and the members at the YMCA. Their kindness, motivation, and belief in me has helped me stay committed to my goals and continue moving forward.
