Employee Spotlight - Sarah Srock

As told to Justin Brantley,

Hi, my name is Sarah Srock, 46 years old, and I am the new Associate Executive Director here at the Bonner Springs Family YMCA. I have been a member for nearly 30 years and an associate for more than 20 years.

I have been physically active for as long as I can remember. I grew up playing sports and even became a Golden Gloves boxer. However, it wasn't until my early 30s that I truly began to appreciate movement and the impact it has on my overall health and quality of life.

My motivation shifted from simply being active to valuing what movement allows me to do every day. Staying healthy and active has enabled me to compete in races, build a career, raise three beautiful daughters, recover from surgeries, dance with my husband, and fully enjoy life's experiences. For me, the journey isn't just about exercise, it's about maintaining the ability to live life to the fullest.

Exercise makes me feel strongโ€”both physically and emotionally. As a runner, there's something freeing about hitting the pavement and letting my mind wander. Running gives me the opportunity to clear my thoughts, relieve stress, and focus on the present moment.
Exercise has become my therapy. It helps me process challenges, recharge mentally, and often sparks some of my most creative ideas. Beyond the physical benefits, movement gives me energy, confidence, and a sense of balance that carries into every aspect of my life.

I continue on this health and wellness journey because I have experienced the benefits firsthand. Staying active helps me remain strong, healthy, and capable of keeping up with the demands and joys of everyday life. Movement is not just something I doโ€”it's an essential part of who I am and how I care for myself.

As I continue to age, I want to look back and be grateful that I invested in my health when I was younger. The choices I make today are helping me build a future where I can continue to live independently, stay active, and fully enjoy the people and experiences that matter most to me.

Itโ€™s important to set realistic expectations for yourself and remember that healthy habits are built over time, not overnight. Find forms of movement that you genuinely enjoy, because you're much more likely to stick with them long-term. Most importantly, view movement not as a fad or a temporary solution, but as an investment in your overall health and well-being. Every step you take today can contribute to a healthier future.

I have been fortunate to have support from so many people throughout my journey. My family and friends have been a constant source of encouragement, and I am also incredibly grateful for the support of my colleagues and the members at the YMCA. Their kindness, motivation, and belief in me has helped me stay committed to my goals and continue moving forward.

Member Spotlight - Gabe Creed

As told to Justin Brantley,

My name is Gabriel Creed. I am 15 years old and I have been a member of the Bonner Springs YMCA for around a year and a half now.

The moment I realized my health needed a change was when I noticed that I was struggling to keep up in sports, and during doctors visits where they would tell me I needed to start making a change in my activity, eating, and overall health habits. My motivation for this was wanting to live a healthier life, and wanting to fulfill my dream of playing sports at a professional level (specifically football).

Before I started losing weight, I felt heavy, slow, sluggish, and that getting out of bed in the mornings was starting to become difficult. I was in a horrible state of mind, wanting to do nothing other than eat horrible food and play video games for 10+ hours at a time. Now that I have been losing weight and getting healthier, I feel amazing. Getting out of bed in the mornings feels like something normal now instead of a chore. I feel lighter on my feet, stronger, faster, and I look a lot better as well. Although I have made this progress, I still have a long way to go.

Iโ€™ve made a ton of progress in just 6 months, losing over 30 pounds while gaining around 30 pounds of muscle as well. Continuing my journey is important to me because I want to continue to live a healthier life and build healthier habits for myself. I want to live a healthier life so when Iโ€™m older, my unhealthy life that I used to live stays in the past and never comes back.

One thing people should know when starting their own journey is that it is not easy whatsoever. I tried to lose weight 4 different times and gave up because it wasnโ€™t as fun as eating junk and being lazy all day. Even though itโ€™s hard, that doesn't mean itโ€™s not worth it. You will feel healthier and way more accomplished if you are dedicated and actually work towards your goals.

Our Y in Motion kids got creative during Science Day by making their very own sun catchers using glue and food coloring! ๐ŸŒˆโœจ
Watching the colors blend together and shine in the sunlight was a fun way to explore science and creativity at the same time. The finished projects turned out amazing, and everyone had a blast learning through hands-on discovery!
