The Power of the Easy Run 🏃🏼♂️
What does an easy run even mean?
We see the term all over social media, Strava, and training plans, but is running ever really easy?
The point of an easy run is to truly go easy. Your breathing should be relaxed and smooth. Your pace should be the slowest manageable pace you can maintain. Sometimes that even means incorporating walk/jog intervals. Easy is relative to the individual.
One thing many runners miss is that an easy run may feel easy, but your heart rate may tell a different story. That’s why I like using heart rate as a guide. It helps keep you disciplined and training in the proper zone.
Here are a few benefits of easy running:
1️⃣ It improves your mindset.
This may be the most important benefit of all. Easy running still gets the blood flowing, releases endorphins, and helps shift your mindset into a more positive and proactive state. You don’t have to run hard to experience the mental health benefits of running.
2️⃣ It builds your aerobic engine.
Physiologically, easy running improves aerobic metabolism and teaches your body to become more efficient. It helps improve your ability to utilize fat as fuel and supports long-term endurance development.
3️⃣ It speeds recovery.
If you’re training consistently, you’re likely doing harder workouts throughout the week. Easy runs help circulate fresh blood through the body, support recovery, and prepare you for the next quality session.
4️⃣ It helps manage stress.
Life gets heavy sometimes. We all face challenges, frustrations, and anxious moments. An easy run can help clear your mind, process emotions, and bring you back to the present moment.
5️⃣ It prepares you for harder running.
Whether it’s before a workout, a race, or as part of your training week, easy running helps prepare your cardiovascular system for greater demands. If you go out too hard too soon, you’ll often find yourself in oxygen debt and struggling to settle into a rhythm.
And don’t forget, easy running is also one of the best ways to cool down after a hard workout. A few minutes of relaxed running helps bring the body back down gradually and can improve recovery moving forward.
The next time you’re out on an easy run, don’t rush it. Embrace it. Appreciate it. The easy run isn’t just filler mileage. It’s one of the most important tools you have as a runner.
