Bogus Basin Ski Education Foundation

Bogus Basin Ski Education Foundation BBSEF: Building a healthy community through competition. Today BBSEF has grown to include freeskiing and snowboard programs.

BBSEF (formerly Bogus Basin Ski Racing Alliance) was founded in 1967, to provide training and competition programs for aspiring young ski racers. BBSEF has programs for ages 6 -19, who want to compete in alpine ski racing, freeskiing & snowboarding. Our focus is the development of the athlete as a whole. We believe the overall impact of sports goes well beyond the athletic results, instilling: spo

rtsmanship, accountability, building character and confidence. Sports bring opportunities to make new friends, dream, and work toward the future. It’s no surprise that the Athletes of BBSEF have gone on to become collegiate scholars, Olympians, and leaders in their communities. Our Mission:
To provide competitive Alpine, Freeski and Snowboard programs for the youth of the Treasure Valley. Encouraging our athletes to achieve their academic and athletic goals while learning sportsmanship, building self-esteem, developing a strong work ethic and creating a life love of an active lifestyle. Core Values:
Citizenship * Sportsmanship * Fitness * Community * Teamwork * Ethics

The Michael B. Young award is given in recognition of those who demonstrate Michael's Contagious Enthusiasm for Skiing and/or Snowboarding. This year the award recipient is Coach Mandy Hansen.

Michael B. Young was a friend of BBSEF starting from his first days as a Mitey Mite in 1994. Michael grew up in our program first as an alpine ski racer and freestyle skier. Once he was done competing, Michael, along with his father Barry, revitalized what is now the BBSEF Freeski & Snowboard Program. In short order, Michael became the builder and forerunner extraordinaire of the annual Coaches Cup Gelande jump. The bottom line is that Michael loved to ski no matter what discipline or role he took on. And he shared his great enthusiasm for the sport with anyone lucky enough to cross his path.

Michael and Barry brought the Big Mountain Competition to Bogus Basin the year before Michael passed. The annual event is now named in his honor.

Michael truly epitomized the happy, fun, athletic person that BBSEF is proud to call their own. The Michael B. Young Award is presented annually to a BBSEF member, athlete, coach or volunteer, who is a cheerful inspiration to those around them and best exemplifies Michael’s passion, drive, and love for the sport of skiing and/or snowboarding.

Although Michael’s time with us was far too short, his infectious smile, work ethic and contagious enthusiasm will not be forgotten.

When Coach Luke was about six years old, his uncle invited him skiing for the first time. The ski bug got a hold of him, and he has spent countless days at Bogus Basin – chasing or being chased by friends and family members ever since.

Luke joined BBSEF’s Home Team coaching staff four years ago and brings on the fun. Thanks in part to the fake beard he often wears, the kids on one of his teams started calling him Coach P*e Paw. The moniker stuck.

That same year, after the kids completed their Gelande jumps in the Coaches Cup finals, the coaches were invited to line up and jump. As Luke moved into position to take his turn, all the kids started chanting ‘P*e Paw’. “It was so funny,” he said, “to hear everyone join in. And it worked, I won with the longest jump!”

Luke hopes to join the military after graduating from Timberline High School. “I am thinking about the Marines,” he said, “But I am looking at all my options.”

We are all cheering for you Coach Luke - aka, Coach P*e Paw!

Coach Ledg is cued up and ready to put his new degree to work. “Both my parents own their own businesses. So, I’ve grown up watching it from the inside out.”

Dividing his time between Boise and McCall, his favorite sports as a kid were hockey, soccer and ski racing. Balancing all three gave him a taste of managing a busy schedule.

“A typical day in McCall was school, then training on Little Ski Hill and then heading to the ice rink for hockey practice.”

This was his first season coaching with BBSEF, and he had a lot of fun coaching the 10-year-old boys on Team Denmark. “I am grateful for this age group. They are great, enthusiastic, and entertaining,” he said.

“I think it was my first or second day, we finished our drills, and I asked the boys where they wanted to ski next. They said, ‘Morning Star’, and you know I am new to Bogus. So, I told them to lead the way. They led me into a ravine. They got going, and about halfway down, they cratered into a bank - one after another. It was the funniest pile-up I’d ever seen! We all laughed about it.”

Ledg was pumped when we spoke after the slalom races on day 1 of the Coaches Cup. “I am so proud of how they did in their first race. There were no mess ups on course. They felt confident and willing to step out of their comfort zones.”

Like the boys on Team Denmark, Ledg is confident, willing, and ready to take on the business world.

Congratulations Ledg!

Big Mountain Comp Team member Elliott has been shredding trails ever since his parents turned him onto skiing when he was just two years old. “They brought me to Bogus and taught me how to ski. Bogus is my home mountain.”

Elliott joined BBSEF as a Mitey Mite and has been honing his racing and freeski techniques ever since. “I think I was in second grade when I first joined,” he said. “I raced with North series, took some time off, and then joined the Freeride team when I got to high school. I've skied with Coach Zach Tomlinson ever since.”

Competitions are his favorite. “You get to meet all sorts of people from different schools and different ski clubs that you wouldn’t otherwise get to know. I have friends for life!”

Elliott graduates from Boise High in June and plans to attend either the University of Washington or UC Santa Barbara. “I am interested in Econ right now. We’ll see where that takes me.”

His summer plans include mountain biking, camping, hanging out with his friends, and spending as much time as possible in the outdoors.

“It was a lot of fun to grow up in the program,” he said. “It gave me a bigger perspective and definitely made me a better skier.”

It has been just as fun having Elliott with us here at BBSEF. Congratulations, Elliott. You are going to send it!

Let’s hear it for Norway Home Team Coach Susanna! She will walk across the Timberline High School stage this June with a diploma in hand.

Though her plans for the summer are still up in the air, she is excited to kick off her studies in Environmental Chemistry at Boise State University in the fall.

Susanna’s path to coaching started when she was just 4-years old and her dad put her on skis for the first time. She joined BBSEF as a U8 and followed that up with a couple of years on Freeski teams. “My one shot at competing in the Michael B Young Big Mountain was set to be on Inspiration. I really wanted to do it, but it got weathered out,” she said. No doubt - had the clouds cooperated - she would have sent it in style!

Susanna joined the coaching staff alongside her dad and cousin and enjoys working with BBSEF’s youngest skiers. “This was such a crazy season, but the girls worked hard every week.”

That work paid off during the first weekend that the backside was open. “We skied a double-black diamond together. It was a first for many of them, and they all did really well.”

An AP student in Ceramics at Timberline, Susanna turns her attention now to her passions off the mountain - sculpting and dabbling in the arts.

Here’s to Susanna - Slopeside Sculptor and Environmental Chemist!

Congratulations to Team Belgium’s Coach Tyler Meredith! He graduates from Boise State with a degree in Civil Engineering this May. His career is already off and running with a position at Horrocks Engineering where he will apply his expertise to projects throughout the Treasure Valley.

Tyler discovered a love of skiing as a kid on the slopes of his neighborhood mountain, Sierra at Tahoe. His dad taught him how to ski at age 6 or 7. Then he was off to the races with South Lake Tahoe’s Buddy Werner Ski Team.

His favorite race is one that did not happen. “It was a U10/U12 race that got canceled due to a storm. We got to freeski on a powder day with no grooming. There was so much snow that we were straight lining on blues and barely moving.”

Ski racing is a varsity sport at Ponderosa High School. So naturally, he joined the team. He raced all four years, qualifying for State three times. He threw down with the best of his peers at North Star, Mammoth and Shasta.

Tyler discovered BBSEF upon arrival in Idaho and has been a Home Team coach ever since. “I just really love skiing and sharing the fun with kids. Plus it is great to see how much they progress.”

One season, his team of young boys were nervous. “Several in the group were scared, if not terrified during the first couple of weekends. Halfway through the season they were ripping black diamonds. They were fearless! And the one who’d had the most fear was leading the charge!”

“Out of any job I’ve had, this one is my favorite. I love to wake up and then head to the mountain to spend the day with everyone here,” said Tyler.

As it happens, Coach Tyler sleeps as hard as he skis. One memorable day, Bogus Basin Road closed for a few hours after training. When the closure ended, Chuck and Shannon prepared to leave the Training Center.

“The lights were out. We were ready to lock the doors,” said Coach Chuck. “I noticed what looked like feet in the Coaches’ room. I asked Shannon, ‘Is somebody still there?’ She walked over and removed a coat draped over Tyler’s head. He was sound asleep!”

We hope you were enjoying ski dreams Coach Tyler!
