PSA: Broken Horn Trail is still closed as a new easement has not yet been secured. A new TRAIL CLOSED sign was installed and the pedestrian gate was secured with a chain and lock to remind trail users of its status.

It was brought to my attention by a resident that the trail closed signs at the pedestrian/vehicle gate on Broken Horn Road were gone. The resident assumed this meant that the trail was open.

To be clear - BROKEN HORN TRAIL IS STILL CLOSED TO ALL TRAFFIC!

Failure to respect the private property rights of our neighbors during easement negotiations may jeopardize ANY future access to Broken Horn and subjects violators to possible trespassing charges. Destroying, damaging, and/or removing Avimor signage may subject individuals to other enforcement actions.

Avimor Trails PSA: WInter Trail Closures / Access Restrictions to Broken Horn Road

Trail closures to accommodate and protect wintering wildlife will begin on Friday, December 1, 2023 and will remain in effect through March 31, 2024. These closures affect many of Avimor's trails including the popular Spring Creek trail which is closed east of the canyon. Consult the annotated trail map (see attached) for details and please respect the wildlife by observing the posted signage. Note that trails located near the village center (i.e. within the yellow line) are the only trails that will remain open. Authorized hunters are excepted.
Also, due to damage from offroad vehicles, the easement for Broken Horn Road, Trail #11, was revoked by the property owners / neighbors south of Avimor. A new access agreement has been negotiated that will restrict access to any motorized vehicles in the future. Until the easement is finalized, however, NO ACCESS is permitted including pedestrian and bicycle. An update will be provided when the easement is finalized. Please respect the property owners' privacy and rights lest all access be terminated.

Avimor Trails Update:

Winter trail closures come to an end as of today, Saturday, April 1. The winter leashing requirements for ALL open trails is extended, however, until Monday, May 1 to ensure wildlife safety and to protect nesting birds. Please respect this requirement as this period of time is critical for the survival of many species.

Also, please respect the trails and those who volunteer to maintain them by using discretion and turning back when you encounter wet, muddy conditions (as expected today).

Also be aware of the presence of sheep and their guard dogs. MTBers should dismount when approaching or passing through an area where they are present. Dogs not on leash could be mistaken for predators and dealt with by the guard dogs.

We expect to issue new trail maps in the near future that will clarify trail use and leashing requirements for the coming season. Construction closures indicated on the present and future maps should be honored. We will be reopening trails in these areas as various phases of construction are completed during the year.

Stay tuned. Please feel free to email me:

Avimor Trail News: Gate repairs / Request for Action

The gate near the trailhead for Burnt Car (Trail #10) in Phase 10 was reported open and unable to be properly closed. I was able to perform repairs this morning and it is now operating as designed.

The malfunction was likely caused by repeatedly allowing the gate to slam shut resulting in the bending of the gate stop plate which finally allowed the gate to force or wedge its way past the frame. The second picture illustrates the gate stop in its normal configuration after the repairs (which included bending the fairly substantial piece of metal back into shape). We are discussing possible improvements to the gate design including replacement with a cattle guard similar to what is located on the Access Road at the end of Phase 10.

It is requested that when using this or other gates, especially of this design, that care be exercised to not let the gate forcefully slam shut. Time and materials for gate repairs/replacement are not inexpensive and we all need to do our part to minimize maintenance expenses. Thanks.

Avimor residents received a PSA email from Zoe, our conservation director, about seasonal trail closures. The email included an updated trail map and well as discussions about trail rules and etiquette. The contents of the email are applicable to non-residents as well. A link to a browser version of the PSA email is provided later in the post.

A couple of takeaways from the email include:

(1) new trail closures are now in effect. These include closures imposed in the past as well as Fiddleneck Ridge ( #12) from the trailhead at Broken Horn Road ( #11) to the junction with Fisher Lane / Broken Horn ( #13), Fisher Lane / Broken Horn ( #13) east of its junction with Fiddleneck ( #12), and Burnt Car ( #10) east of its junction with Fiddleneck ( #12).

(2) The construction areas to the north and the trails within are still closed. Much of the area will be either extremely muddy or frozen with many large, deep ruts that can be ankle twisters depending on temperature. There are also some open trenches the last time I checked.

(3) a reminder that on all open trails from December 1 - March 31

"ALL DOGS MUST BE ON LEASHES - NO EXCEPTIONS!"

Note: use of service dogs on the trails is pursuant to Title 56-704A

I've included an annotated version of the trail map provided in the email blast to more clearly define the boundaries of the seasonal closures as well as the construction closures. Should the status of the construction area change during this period, the seasonal closure extents indicated by the YELLOW line will still be in effect.

I wanted to send a huge shoutout and express my appreciation to the Centennial Patriots Mountain BIke Team, their coaches, and parents for their support of our recent trail workday at Avimor. I also want to recognize, John Palumbo, the executive director of SWIMBA and an Eagle resident, for his efforts to organize this event.
Our project was to provide a rideable reroute of one section of Meeker's Trail ( #17) and trim / refresh another section which had become overgrown due to its long closure during construction. Because of the overwhelming number of volunteers, we were able to benchcut a steep side hill segment including armoring with boulders and smooth out another segment of previously trimmed rangeland despite the difficult soil conditions. After we get some moisture and traffic, the new section may need some finishing work, but it is certainly rideable now. We also not only trimmed the badly overgrown top section of Meeker's but a substantial portion of Shooting Range Trail ( #5) from the Whiptail Ridge double track towards the connection of Whistling Pig ( #3). All told, about 3/4 miles of trails were trimmed and cleared.
As the saying goes, many hands make the work light. It was a privilege to share the load with such a dedicated group especially the young student athletes. It was also gratifying to see some of the team enjoy the honor of riding the new section, the fruit of their labor, for the first time.
Again, many thanks and GO PATRIOTS!!!

Trails Update:
A cattle guard bridge has replaced the gate on the ranch access road ( #18) at the end of Phase 10.

Here are pictures of the bridge by itself and with the side by side we sometimes utilize for trail maintenance.

This is a new design which may be utilized at other gate locations in the future.

Very disappointed to see this vandalism out at Sheep Rock. If you’re a parent that’s missing some black, blue, green, yellow and purple spray paint and this water bottle, your kid(s) might have some explaining to do.

Black bears right at the Spring Creek gate entrance. Was about to ride up and they made their presence known and were vocal!
