Grassroots Tennis had another successful tournament in September. Due to rain, the kids were unable to play on last day, which also happened to be the AWARDS day. I could not bear to end the tournament without having given out awards. So while I had to cancel all matches for the day, I asked the players to show up for the awards ceremony later on in evening once the rain stopped. I was happy to see that several showed up, and not one complained about not having being able to play that day.
Weather is not in our control, but our attitude is. I handed out Sportsmanship awards and 1st, 2nd, 3rd place trophies. I called each child by their name and said a little something about them. Regardless of scores and results, to me each is a winner for showing up, for putting in the hard work and for wanting to compete and give their bests.
