Did you trust yourself?

Or did you immediately start gathering evidence so you could prove you were allowed to know it?

I’m increasingly convinced some of us don’t have an anxiety problem.

We have a head start we’ve been taught not to trust.

I want to show them how intelligent the thing they've been trying to fix actually was.

Anticipating was intelligent. Overexplaining was intelligent. Becoming this capable was intelligent. Reading everyone's reactions was intelligent. Perfecting, proving, adapting, all of it was intelligent.

Keep the brilliance. What I'm interested in is the exact moment the adaptation turned into the price you thought you had to pay to use it. That's the tax.

This Labor Day I'm running a small experiment. Instead of working harder on the pattern, you take it to Fieldwork. 24 hours, one tax, one possibility. No Zoom, no homework. Normally $300, $150 through Labor Day.

That's a different thing entirely.

You notice the tension in the room. Someone seems disappointed. The client's email sounds off. Your partner's gone quiet. Someone's energy shifts and you clock it instantly.

Your perception worked perfectly. And then your brain says great, another assignment for us.

That's the tax. What if you could accurately feel what someone else is going through without it automatically becoming your job to fix?

I made what might be my favorite Labor Day offer ever. A sale for women tired of laboring on themselves.

All week I've been asking Former Gifted Girls which emotional tax they're still paying for their brilliance. And it hit me what we usually do the second we recognize a pattern. We assign ourselves more homework.

Analyze it. Journal it. Regulate it. Find the wound. Build a strategy.

I don't want that this time. I want you to recognize it, then bring it to Fieldwork.

You tell me the tax, a few lines on where it shows up, and what you'd rather have be possible instead. Your only assignment after that is: don't work on it. Just notice.

Recognition Fieldwork is normally $300. Through Labor Day it's $150 for 24 hours.

You know exactly what you mean. Right up until someone doesn't understand you, and suddenly you're writing the sequel, the prequel, and the director's commentary.

Gift: you see connections other people haven't gotten to yet.

Tax: if they don't understand me, it's on me to become more understandable.

Here's the question I keep sitting with. What if someone not getting it isn't always proof your communication failed? What if sometimes they're just not your people?

Here's something I can't stop turning over.

What happens to a brilliant girl who grows up without anyone accurately recognizing how brilliant she actually was?

She doesn't stop being brilliant. She just gets extremely good at producing evidence instead. Credentials. Results. Being right. Being useful. Always knowing the answer.

And then one day someone finally sees her clearly, and instead of relaxing into it, her system goes now don't f**k this up, prove they were right.

That's the Proving Tax. Does being recognized feel like receiving something to you? Or does it just open a new performance review?

Recognizing what naturally comes alive through me.

Recognizing why it matters.

Recognizing themselves in it.

Recognizing enough value to participate, share, subscribe, buy and bring other people into the culture.

Maybe we don't need to become increasingly performative to get increasingly visible.

Former Gifted Girl math: if I can see how it could be better, it isn't finished yet.

Which is deeply inconvenient when you're sharp enough to spot 47 ways almost anything could improve.

At some point that discernment turns into an invoice. One more edit. One more module. One more qualification. One more explanation. One more Canva tweak nobody but you will ever notice.

Seeing how to make something better is the gift. Never getting to feel done is the tax.

I keep writing about a woman I call Capable Candice.

Candice can handle almost anything. Until she thinks she's in trouble.

An unexpected email. "Can we talk?" A text with a weird tone. A meeting invite with zero context.

Her adult brain knows, logically, that nothing catastrophic has happened. Her body did not get that memo. Her body goes straight to everybody to your stations.

She's done the work. She understands the pattern. She has coping strategies stacked up. She's just tired of paying the toll every single time someone might be a little disappointed in her.

Try this for one day. Notice how many times you check to see how someone felt about something you just did.

Post something. Check. Send the email. Check. Make the offer. Check. Say the slightly controversial thing. Check check check.

It's not always about needing people to like you. A lot of the time you're actually gathering intel. Was that okay. Did it land. Did I get it right. Can I trust what I just thought, now that someone else has weighed in on it.

I call that the Response Tax. Your response contains information I think I need before I trust my own.
