The 2022 shed season is off to a great start. 5 minutes into the first shed hunt of the year and found the left side to this toad on the family grape farm. After looking nearby as well as far away for the match it took a little bit of rain and warm weather to expose the match, which then was found by mom laying only a few feet away under the snow. All that was sticking out was a few inches of tine. What an awesome first shed find for her on her first time shed hunting (A.K.A. Walking the dog😂) It makes you wonder just how many of these things you walk by and what a fresh pair of eyes can do!

Day 1 of 2 of the lake trout being on fire. When the water temps drop these fish can move into surprisingly shallow water and become vulnerable to spoons and bladebaits in casting distance from shore or docks.

first solo duck hunt paid off with a NY Mallard limit. Duck hunting is often associated with getting to be with friends and having a good time but sometimes it’s nice to enjoy the peace and quiet of it all. Just you, the ducks, and the water.

4 nights of calling. 3 greys, 1 red, and 1 coyote called in and finally sealed the deal. Not gonna lie learning to hunt these awesome predators at night had more of a learning curve than we thought. We learned that calling them in is just half the battle. You still have to make a clean, ethical shot at night on some pretty impatient critters.

had an eventful last 3 hours of the NY gun season. After filling a squirrel limit the .22 was traded for a .30-06 and the venison was put in the freezer. Sometimes you just gotta go get some meat 🍖 and it’s nice to know it can be as close as your backyard.

Not sure what to call it but one of the best duck recipes we’ve had. It’s also one of the simplest with duck breasts trimmed and cooked to medium rare then sliced thin across the grain and placed on warm Texas toast with mayo, mustard, bread&butter pickles, mozzarella cheese and a bit of hot honey mustard. Then just place back in a hot pan for a few minutes on each side to let everything melt together.😋

If you have any ideas on a name for this sandwich then let’s hear them in the comments!

New York might be one of the best duck hunting states in the country. Where else can you find mallards and black ducks on lakes and rivers, divers on big lakes, geese in dry fields, pintails, wigeon, and teal in swamps, and marshes, and sea ducks all within an hour of eachother. and went to Lake Ontario armed with kayaks, and a dozen hand painted decoys and came away with just two ducks shy of a two man old squaw limit.

What started as a slow day turned into a pretty cool hunt. Although it looks like a drake and hen pair of mallards the “hen mallard” is actually a mallard black duck hybrid and are relatively common around here. But one this cool looking is something else.

(Also note the unique addition of chapstick to call lanyard. It comes in handy on those windy days of calling more than you might think😂)

The one thing about winter time fishing is either the fish are hitting or they are not, there usually isn’t much middle ground but today they were on fire! Ended the day with around 15 bass, 5 pickerel, a few perch and first northern pike. That’s a pretty good day in our book!

While the first half of the NY duck season was definitely not one for the books for us the second season is off to a pretty good start. With a few firsts, including first black duck, a surprise 4 man bluebill limit, and our first all day duck hunt. In all it was a day to remember. And while the weather would have been horrible if you were having a picnic it made the duck hunting great and kept them up and moving most of the day. It just shows you why when others are inside waiting for winter to end we are outside in the wind and snow with a smile on our face. 😎
