How Much Are You Carrying?

You wouldn’t be able to lift a 55 gallon drum filled with water. Although you could easily pick up a cleaning bucket filled with water, you wouldn’t want to hold it for a long time. If you tried, it would feel as if it were getting heavier rather quickly.

Holding a cup filled with water is a cinch. Anyone can do it. But how long can you hold it for? The longer it’s held, the heavier it seems. At some point in time, you would need to put it down.

Just as a seemingly light object becomes heavier the longer it’s held, so do the burdens you carry around with you on a constant basis. An issue that initially appears minor grows in significance the longer you hold onto it.

The weight increases steadily as you clutch onto numerous concerns. You become bogged down even faster with the cumulative mass of your collected burdens. Your stress level rises while your energy and enthusiasm drops. Because the progression is gradual, it’s not readily noticeable until it starts to become overwhelming.

Every time you pick up a minor burden it appears to be no big deal. It gets added to your load without much thought. Since the mental weight increases gradually, you adjust to it and incrementally adjust to the growing load.

Stay vigilant. Be aware of what you are picking up. It’s too easy to revert back to your old pattern. As you empty your mental load, you’ll feel lighter. You will quickly realize how pointless it is to pick things up in the first place.

Don't Cry Over Spilled Milk

The age-old proverb, "Don't cry over spilled milk" contains more wisdom than most people recognize. Although everyone has heard this saying, few apply it effectively to their lives. This deceptively simple adage has the power to alleviate a lot of stress and suffering.

Let's look at this proverb's literal meaning and then consider the wide ranging practical applications. Suppose you knock a bottle of milk over in the sink and all the milk runs down the drain. What are your options? The milk is gone. No matter what you do, you will never get it back.

A do-over is not possible, you can't go back in time. If the milk made a mess, you clean it up. You can learn to be more careful next time and not leave the bottle where it can be tipped over. In short, you can't change the past but you can influence the present and future.

Do what you can to avert spills but don't cry when they occur. Clean up the mess, pick yourself up, and keep moving forward. Learn from your experiences and you will be all the wiser.

You Take Your Attitude with You!

Imagine always wearing really dark sunglasses everywhere you go. Anywhere you looked you would see objects darker than they really were. This false perspective of your world would taint everything you saw.

Your attitude works the same way; you take it with you wherever you go. It filters your reality. A negative attitude, just like the sunglasses, causes whatever situations you encounter to appear darker. A positive attitude does the exact opposite, your circumstances seem brighter.

A positive attitude is not a magic elixir which fixes all problems. A positive attitude is not guaranteed to bring success. However, a positive attitude does greatly enhance the chances of happiness.

Look for the positive elements in each situation. There is some component, regardless of how small, which can help you take the next step forward. This approach allows problems to slide off of you instead of becoming embedded.

Smiling evokes positive emotions. Smile, especially when you don’t feel like it. Those who smile are happier. Because they are happier, they smile more. It’s a continuous cycle which works to your benefit.

Your positive, can-do attitude will be with you wherever you go. As an invaluable asset, it will help you solve problems, and overcome obstacles.

Who Do You Take Advice From?

It’s not true that experience is the best teacher; someone else’s experience is a better teacher. So, who do you turn to for advice? After all, there’s no reason to reinvent the wheel.

You want advice from those people who are where you want to be. People who have attained the same goals you are striving for know what the pitfalls are and how to overcome them. Their advice can save you a vast amount of time and effort.

It’s great if you know someone personally, but you don’t have to in order to benefit from their experience. Most successful people write books or articles or have books or article written about them. They give interviews and talks.

There are frequent news stories about people who succeed as well as those who fail. These stories provide invaluable examples you can learn from. Always look for the common personality and character traits displayed by successful people. Conversely, what are the elements shared by those who fail?

Be selective about the advice you follow. Search out people who have attained the goals you seek. They know a lot about what works and what doesn’t. Learn from their experience and you’ll accelerate your success.

A New Year, A New Beginning

The New Year is a time of resolutions. It's a time when people commit to making a change in their life. Losing weight, changing jobs, saving money, making money, a new relationship, getting in shape, going back to school, or giving up smoking, are just some of the goals people set for themselves on January 1st.

Although it's possible for anyone to make a change or a new start, it takes determination, commitment, and persistence. A new goal must be your own. You have to really want it. Without a burning desire, your motivation will fade quickly. It's virtually impossible to make a change due to external pressure.

You may agree to what someone else wants you to do, but it's very difficult to succeed without an internal drive. So, in order to successfully make a change or reach a goal, you have to make sure it's what you really want.

Don't start off on the wrong foot by making excuses as to why you will probably fail. If you don't truly believe you can do it, you won't. People who do this will say something like, "I'll try to do it, but …” Or you may hear, "I tried before and it didn't work but I'll give it another go." Before you begin, make sure the only things you are telling yourself are, "I can," "I will," and "I will do whatever it takes."

A new beginning is a three-step process. You have to first know what you want, formulate a plan to achieve it, and then take the necessary action to get it. Setting a specific goal is essential. The more detailed the better. If you want to lose weight, how much and by when? If you want a new job, what will it be and how much will it pay? If you want to save money, how much and how often?

Next, you need a plan. Just like your goal, your plan must be as detailed as possible. If you are going to lose weight, what will be your menu each week? Are you going to go on a specific diet, cut out certain foods, or just eat less? For finding a new job, what will be your strategy? Do you need a new resume? Will you look on line, in the classifieds, use an employment agency, network, cold call, or all of these? If you want to save more money, in what areas will you cut back? Do you know where your money is going? Have you created a budget?

You want your plan to be doable. The smaller the steps are, the more likely you will be to succeed. Any time you feel a step is too big, break it down further. It doesn't matter how small each step is so long as you keep going and never give up.

Losing 20 pounds may feel overwhelming, but dropping two pounds a month doesn't seem too bad. If you keep at it for 10 months, you will reach your goal. Saving $3000 might appear beyond reach, but cutting back $9 a day on family spending is manageable.

Finally, you must take action. The best goals and greatest plans will go nowhere without action. The reason you divided your plan into small sections is so it would be easy to take action, one day at a time. All you have to do is keep going, until you achieve your goal.

Holiday Stress Busters

41% of those polled are stressed by the holidays. Fortunately, there are many ways to bust holiday stress.

Set realistic goals. Your expectations should correspond to your circumstances, time, and money. Don't try to outdo family and friends. You don't have to impress anyone.

A wonderful holiday season doesn't have to be expensive. Set a manageable budget and stick to it. Determine before you go shopping how much you will spend on food and presents. Entertaining doesn't have to cost a lot. Sumptuous meals can be prepared without expensive ingredients. Use your imagination and creativity.

If there are lots of people on your gift list, contact them and agree to a maximum cost for each gift. They will probably appreciate a pre-set spending limit as much as you will. Consider making your own gifts, such as baked goods or crafts.

A variety of free or low-cost activities are available. Many communities provide holiday programs such as parades and winter carnivals. Informal gatherings with friends and family can be lots of fun without obligating anyone to host a big party.

Accept relatives and friends for who they are. Put aside differences; don't try to resolve them during gatherings. Bringing up past issues will not add to the seasonal joy.

Divorced parents need to be extra sensitive to their children's emotions. Make children's needs a priority and avoid using them as pawns. Children want to spend time with both of their parents so work together to facilitate reciprocal visitation.

If you are hosting a meal or party, ask each guest to bring a dish. Delegate responsibilities to your spouse and children. Everyone will feel included and no one has to carry the full load.

Don't snap at others. Have rules and guidelines for older children returning home for the holidays. Ask guests to supervise their children if they get too rambunctious.

Plan ahead for what you want to accomplish before the holiday rush starts. You can pace yourself if you have enough time. Spreading out activities leaves you calmer and more relaxed.

Prioritize what you want to accomplish. Organize your time to allow for the most important tasks. Say no to requests that don't fit your plans. Be flexible.

Make time for yourself. Maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating properly, exercising, and getting enough sleep.

It's normal and ok to feel sad during the holidays. Life is unpredictable and brings many changes. Don't compare today with the good old days from your past. Take charge of your life. Don't act like a victim. Spend time with supportive and caring people. Help others by volunteering. Whenever you bring a smile to someone's face, you will feel better too.

Make realistic resolutions. Set goals you can accomplish. Don't abandon your resolutions after a few weeks. After the holidays, actively working towards your goals will keep you positive and focused on the good in life.

True Holiday Spirit

Among other things, the holidays are a time of giving and receiving gifts. The question most often asked of people is, "what did you get?" Much less frequently asked is, "what did you give?" Invariably, the inquiries concern material gifts. Purchasing a gift can certainly be thoughtful and a wonderful gesture, especially when it's backed up by your actions.

However, the most valuable presents are those that aren't sold in stores. When you give your love, your time, help someone in need, aid another in solving a problem or overcoming an obstacle, you give something priceless.

The true spirit of the holidays is giving. When you give, you receive. You can get anything in life you want by helping enough others get what they want. But only if you give without expecting anything in return. The impact of giving isn't limited to just the holiday season, it's something that has value all year.

The power of giving is often underestimated. When you give unconditionally, you don't just impact the recipient; you start a chain reaction. By brightening the life of one person you also affect all those who they then touch.

No gesture of giving or kindness is too small. Holding the door open at a store, helping someone carry groceries to their car, letting another car in front of you, saying please and thank you, and saying hello to a stranger you pass on the sidewalk, are some of the many things you can do daily.

For family and friends, your time is one of the most precious gifts you can offer. Are you there for others when they need you? Do you offer a hand without being asked? Do you help out when asked?

Too often, people get caught up in their own desires, thus losing sight of the needs of others. A person who tries to get through life by looking out for himself or herself first is invariably frustrated. Often this person views life as a competition to determine who can accumulate more.

On the other hand, those who are concerned for the wellbeing of others are happier, more content, and more satisfied. By giving without expecting, they in turn receive the things they need.

Giving is a simple concept that works every time it is applied. There will be people who don't appreciate what you do, but it doesn't matter. You are giving without anticipating anything in return. Besides, there will be many more who are thankful for your efforts.

If you don't treat others well, buying a gift won't compensate for your behavior. The recipient might like what you give them but it won't make up for your actions. You can't bribe someone to forgive the way you treat them with a present.

The best gift you can receive is the joy of making someone else happy. Being unselfish is a wonderful way to live. When you give with no ulterior motives, your actions are seen as genuine. Should you expect something in return, your behavior is always suspect. We all know people who do nice things only when they want something in return.

Make giving a daily routine. Don't start and end with the holiday season. Every day is a good day to do something nice. When people feel good due to your actions, you can't help but feel happy yourself. And that is priceless. The most significant action you can take is having a positive impact on the lives of others.

What Can You Do for Others?

Being concerned about your life is natural and healthy. Working toward your goals is essential for accomplishing those things which are important to you. Focusing on your needs and how to fulfill them is appropriate. You are ultimately responsible for ensuring your wellbeing.

However, your needs are more readily met when your efforts include concern for what you can do for others. Giving of yourself leads to personal growth, as well as enhanced happiness. In fact, you can get everything in life you want by helping enough other people get what they want.

When you do more for others, it should be done without any expectation of reward. It should also be done without having to be asked. Your actions are without condition.

Show appreciation to those who help you. Reciprocating is a great way to thank someone. When a person has been there for you when you need them, you can be there for them in their time of need.

Your success is based on how much you do for others. What you send out does come back to you. This process works. It’s an amazing experience which enriches everyone.

Wear a Non-Stick Coating

Non- stick cookware is popular because whatever you cook washes right off. Without it, food sticks and even burns, making a real mess. Problems are to people as food is to cookware. Some people seem to have a non-stick coating. Nothing sticks to them. Problems and adversity slide right off.

There is a tendency for people to fixate on the negative while ignoring the positive. Growing up, we are surrounded by others complaining about problems. Rarely, if ever, are we exposed to examples of people focusing on all the good in their lives.

Additionally, we also look for problems to focus on. It’s not uncommon to conjure up issues to worry about. So rather than have a non-stick coating, we actively look for and even attract problems. Once we find them, we cling to them, refusing to let go.

You start developing a non-stick coating in small increments. Although desirable, you can’t turn around a lifelong engrained habit in one step. Begin with five minutes increments. For just the next five minutes, you are not going to allow anything to stick. Additionally, you are not going to worry. This is manageable. You can do it.

Wear a non-stick coating. Enjoy life without carrying around problems. Blaze your own path free of the critics. You will experience more energy, happiness, and success.

Thanksgiving: Have an Attitude of Gratitude

Thanksgiving is much more than a big meal with family and friends. It's a time to reflect on, and be thankful for, all of the good things you have. It's important to be grateful, not just on Thanksgiving, but each and every day. Rather than lamenting what you feel is lacking in your life, begin each new day by developing an attitude of gratitude. Take inventory of your blessings and you will be surprised at just how much you have to be thankful for.

If you have enough to eat, a place to live, a way to get around, people who care about you, or people you care about, then you are wealthy. If you lack any of these elements, you must still be grateful for what you do have, while striving to obtain whatever is absent.

Focus on all positive aspects of your life. Take nothing for granted. Every morning, recharge your appreciation. Be happy for everything there is, not upset over what you feel is missing.

Dreams of the future shouldn’t diminish appreciation for the present. If all you do is concentrate on what you want, you won't enjoy today. Don't be jealous of others; what they do or have has no bearing on you.

You can feel bitter or resentful for a variety of reasons. Perhaps you feel something is missing from your life, things aren't going your way, or you have been treated unfairly. You may wonder, "why do these things always happen to me?"

Life's problems tend to dominate your thoughts, turning your focus to what you feel is wrong. You may start to resent those who appear to be better off. You’re apt to dwell on things you think would make your life better if you had them. If only you had more money, more time, a bigger house, a different car, a different job, a different boss, had picked a different career, etc.

Once your attitude becomes one of deficiency instead of abundance and appreciation, you can become overwhelmed by feelings of frustration and feel like a victim. As this happens, a consuming vicious cycle starts.

Being bitter or resentful blows situations out of proportion. People who are bitter frequently find that their situations deteriorate and their mental and physical health decays.

It’s difficult, if not impossible, to achieve your goals while you are bitter or resentful. Regardless of what challenges might befall you, bitterness makes finding solutions much more elusive.

There is no point to feeling bitter since it accomplishes nothing, harms you and makes things worse. Filling yourself with gratitude on a daily basis makes you feel good, while driving out negative feelings.

Begin your practice of gratitude each morning as soon as you wake. Every day is a great day. If you have any doubts, try missing one. Take inventory of everything, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant, that is good in your life.

If it helps, make a written list of all things you are grateful for. Read your list every day. As you do this, you will build and reinforce your attitude of gratitude. Don't waste any time with what you feel you don't have.

Keep things in perspective. Consider all the people who have overcome difficulties far worse than yours. Don't be consumed by your problems, there is always a solution. Maintaining an attitude of gratitude allows your mind to devise a resolution for your circumstances.

Make everyday a day of Thanksgiving and you will be amazed how much better your life will become.
