YOIUTH PROGRAM "DOING SOMETHING VERY RIGHT."
A shout out to our program came from James Sepanski, the waterfront director at Island Bay Yacht Club. He was the instructor who recently certified our two youth program instructors James and Will. In a letter to Lauren, our program director, he complimented her by writing, "You must be doing something very right. Will and James were the star instructors of the class. They had great powerboat skills, great presentation skills and really good on-the-water skills. They were fun and very serious."

Thanks to Lauren, James, Will and the rest of our staff for representing us well in the greater sailing community.

LMSA WATER LEVEL UPDATE: Why They Can't Just "Drain the Lake" & Club Status.
As we navigate the high water at the club, a common question from members has been: “The rain has stopped, so why can't they just open the dam and drain the lake back to normal?” Here is a quick look behind the scenes at how Lake Monroe's flood control works, based on recent data from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers:
Why they CAN'T just drain the lake: It comes down to strict environmental regulations and downstream safety. Lake Monroe was built primarily for flood control. By design, it is supposed to hold onto excess water during heavy rains to protect the towns and properties downstream.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers operates under strict legal rules: they cannot increase the water release from the dam if downstream rivers are already too high. Right now, they must keep the dam's discharge restricted to a minimum because downstream gauges on the White River—at Bedford, Shoals, and Petersburg—are at or above minor flood stage. Opening the floodgates right now would cause severe, artificial flooding in those downstream communities. We have to wait for those rivers to clear out before our lake level can be lowered.
The Good News:
Drier weather is in the forecast, which will allow those downstream river levels to drop so the dam can safely increase its discharge rate.
Club Status: We Are OPEN!
While we wait for the system to do its job, the high water continues to submerge our main parking areas and heavily impact access to all of our docks. Currently, they can be boarded via jon boats at shore. Please plan your trip to the club accordingly!
Despite the logistical challenges, the lake remains fully open and safe for boating. Just keep a sharp eye out for floating debris that washed into the reservoir during the high water.
Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we ride out the high tide!

NOT YOUR AVERAGE YACHT CLUB. Our very own manager, Walt Johnson, was recently featured on WFHB's Activate! to share exactly what makes the Lake Monroe Sailing Association so special. If you've ever wondered who we are and what we do, this interview is the perfect description of our program. Here is a quick summary of what we’re all about:
Environment First: We operate as a non-profit in partnership with the Indiana DNR and are proud to be the area's first officially designated "Indiana Clean Marina."
Education for All: From adult sailing classes to our youth sailing camps with Bloomington Parks and Recreation, we are dedicated to community maritime education.
More Than Sailing: As Walt shares in the interview, while sailing is incredibly fun, the kids in our programs are building real, useful life lessons they will carry forever.
Tune in to the short interview to hear the full story and get a true feel for our mission: https://wfhb.org/activate-walt-johnson-lake-monroe-sailing-association/

FROM FLAMES TO SAILS. If you’ve ever noticed the small, distinct flag flying proudly from a boat's masthead, you are looking at a burgee. It is the official badge of honor used by sailing organizations around the world to identify their members.

At the Lake Monroe Sailing Association, we don't just fly ours on the water—you can also spot our burgee flying proudly from the yardarms on shore at the club!

Our design has a very special backstory deeply connected to our Hoosier heritage. Check out the video below to see the clever transformation from the Indiana State Flag into the official LMSA crest:

The Indiana Torch: On the state flag, the iconic gold torch stands for liberty and enlightenment, with its rays spreading influence far and wide.

Flames into Sails: Watch how the dancing flames of the Indiana torch morph into the blowing sails of our vessel.

Handle into Keel: See how the torch handle is practically identical to—and perfectly doubles as—the sturdy keel of our boat.

While we haven't been able to find in our archives exactly when this clever logo was created or who designed it, the brilliant connection to our state flag lives on every time we raise the flag.

It might not be a Hollywood-level animation, but it perfectly shows how our history meets the water!
