Do I need an X-ray or MRI for my pain?

I get asked this question all the time.

The answer? Not always.

X-rays and MRIs can be incredibly helpful when we need more information—but they don't tell us everything.

Before deciding whether imaging is necessary, we want to know:

✔️ Which movements make your pain better or worse?
✔️ How well are your joints moving?
✔️ Are there changes in strength, stability or flexibility?
✔️ Are there any neurologic or other concerning findings?

For many common back, neck and joint problems, a thorough examination gives us enough information to safely start conservative care.

And if something doesn't look right—or you're not improving the way we'd expect—that's when imaging may become an important next step.

The takeaway: More imaging doesn't necessarily mean better care. The right test is the one that helps answer the right clinical question.

I explain when we use X-rays vs. MRIs—and why something on an MRI isn't necessarily what's causing your pain—in this week's article:

I’ve seen several women over the last couple of weeks with the same complaint: pain on the outside of the hip.

And they’ve had a lot of the same concerns:

Do I need an X-ray or MRI? Is my hip wearing out? Am I headed toward a hip replacement? Or is this just part of getting older?

Often, pain on the outside of the hip isn’t actually coming from the hip joint itself. A common cause is Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome (GTPS), often called hip bursitis.

Since I’ve had this conversation several times recently, I put together a guide explaining why this type of hip pain happens, when imaging may be necessary, and what we can do to treat it.

And no—hip pain isn’t something you should automatically write off as “just getting older.”

What an amazing Saturday at the Race to Stop Hunger 5K!

We are so proud of everyone who showed up, pushed themselves, and crossed that finish line. It was awesome seeing all the hard work from the past several weeks come together on race day!

A HUGE shoutout to our Walk to Run team for winning the award for raising the most money! We couldn’t be prouder of this group and the impact they made both on and off the course.

Congratulations to all of our runners! You crushed it, and we hope this is just the beginning of your running journey!

Yesterday was the final night of our Walk to Run program! 🎉🏃

Just a few weeks ago, many of you were wondering if running a 5K was even possible. Now you’re finishing a program that has helped you build endurance, confidence, and healthy habits one step at a time.

We’re incredibly proud of the work you put in. You showed up, pushed through the tough days, encouraged each other, and proved that consistency beats perfection.

This may be the last class, but we hope it’s just the beginning of your running journey. Keep moving, keep challenging yourself, and remember that every runner started exactly where you did.

Thank you for trusting us to be part of your journey. We can’t wait to cheer you on at race day! 💜

Does your neck really need more stretching?

Maybe.

But maybe not.

One of the biggest misconceptions we see is that muscles always feel tight because they're "too short."

Sometimes they're actually working overtime because another area of your body isn't moving or supporting you well.

Instead of asking:

"What should I stretch?"

Try asking:

✔️ What was I doing when my neck became tight?
✔️ Does changing positions help?
✔️ Does it happen every time I do that activity?

Those patterns can tell us a lot about what's contributing to your symptoms.

We'll be discussing this and more at our Neck & Shoulder Relief Workshop on August 10.

This week was a big milestone for our Walk to Run group—we completed our 5K simulation! 🎉🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️

Over the past several weeks, everyone has put in the work, stayed consistent, and built their endurance one step at a time. This week’s simulation was a chance to put that training to the test and see just how far they’ve come.

Whether you ran the entire distance or mixed in some walk breaks, crossing that 5K mark is something to be proud of. The progress we’ve seen from week one has been incredible, and everyone should take a moment to celebrate how much stronger and more confident they’ve become.

We can’t wait to see everyone crush the official 5K together. 💪

Why do we ask so many questions during your evaluation?

Because where your pain hurts is only part of the story.

We're just as interested in what movements make your pain worse—and what makes it feel better.

Does your back hurt after sitting but feel better after walking?

Does reaching overhead bother your shoulder, but carrying groceries doesn't?

Those patterns give us important clues about why you're hurting and help us create a treatment plan that's specific to you.

Here's something to pay attention to this week:

✔️ What movement makes your pain worse?
✔️ What movement makes it feel better?
✔️ Can you repeat that pattern consistently?

The answers often tell us much more than simply rating your pain from 1–10.

If you're dealing with back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, headaches, or another musculoskeletal problem, we'd be happy to help you figure out what's really causing it.
