In this LA Times op-ed, Amanda Walujono discusses how the Pilates community in Los Angeles can be exclusive to people of color and those who cannot afford the high costs of classes. Despite feeling like a sore thumb in a Pilates class, they continue practicing Pilates because of their love for the practice and its benefits. suggests that creating more accessible spaces, such as donation-based classes and collectives, can make Pilates more inclusive. Focusing on athletic performance, rehabilitation, and feeling better in our bodies, rather than aesthetics, can also open up these spaces for everyone. We are creating our supportive community at +Pilates and are glad to see others doing the same.

Once a community-based exercise, Pilates has become exclusive with mostly wealthy white women dominating workouts. Fitness shouldn't feel out of reach for people of color like me.
