This summer, as part of a new partnership with PrepareRI, three Rhode Island high school students spent seven weeks interning with URI Cooperative Extension.
They took part in hands-on projects, field trips, community outreach, and conversations with Cooperative Extension educators and volunteers — while researching topics they chose themselves, including redlining, medicinal herbs, and wind energy.
PrepareRI connects students with career-focused, work-based learning opportunities. For Cooperative Extension, hosting these students is a natural extension of URI's land-grant mission: sharing knowledge, creating learning opportunities, and preparing the next generation to address challenges in their communities.
Special thanks to Kate Hardesty for championing these placements and helping create meaningful, hands-on learning experiences for the students!
