U.S. Special Operations Command announced the Hypervelocity Improved Carbine program in a May 2026 solicitation, seeking industry proposals for a new carbine designed to replace or improve the M4A1 URG-I. USSOCOM said the goal is to extend effective engagement ranges for 5.56 mm weapons to 600 meters and beyond.
The proposed system must remain compatible with existing M4A1 lower receivers and support standard M855A1, Mk262, and new higher-pressure hypervelocity ammunition. White papers are due June 8, with a Pitch Day scheduled for September 15 and 16 at Fort Moore, Georgia.
