It’s been so great seeing everyone back out on the course again! We wanted to give a quick update on the status of our course since we just hit one month back in business. First, we really appreciate all of you that have come out and been a part of our recovery by playing the course. This is the most crucial thing anyone can do to help us get back to 18 playable holes. Funding has been difficult to come by with all the damage around our region and critical town infrastructure. We realize golf doesn’t fall in this category for most local tax payers. Understanding that is the first step to seeing what it takes to replace what was lost and actually be able to operate a thriving 18 hole course. Multiple times per day we are asked, “We are so glad your back 9 is open, but when will the front 9 open up?”. We thought it would be helpful to let everyone know where that stands. Right now we are working to secure funding to replace our maintenance facility that was destroyed and is being torn down. We are also waiting for the remainder of our new leased equipment to replace what we lost. Right now we have roughly one half of what we need to operate. The remainder of this lease is set to be delivered sometime in October. We are working with a FEMA small project plan to replace our bridges on the front 9. Both are full replacements from the foundation up and have to pass building code and meet structural parameters set by FEMA inspections. Agronomically speaking, our greens are the biggest thing we have left to get back in order. Months withought irrigation or the ability to maintain a consistent spray program took its toll on our 100 year old front 9 greens. We have 3 trouble greens left on the front that are finally coming around. This is due to an aggressive treatment plan, no foot traffic and heavy watering. If we were to put people on these greens prior to them being ready, we would never get them back. Our fall aeration is set for September 29th and 30th and the grow in period to follow will shed some light on opening. We understand everyone is eager to get the front 9 back and we are too. Please know we are working towards it and will open as soon as reasonably possible. In the meantime, come on out and enjoy our back 9. Jerry and his staff have it in great shape!

We’ve got great news for everyone! Enough equipment arrived yesterday for staff to get the back 9 open and be able to realiably keep it maintained. We will officially reopen our back nine on Tuesday, June 24th! We will begin taking tee times online starting this Wednesday and will have shop hours for call in times on 6/18, 6/19 and 6/23 from 9am-5pm. On 6/24 our shop hours will be set from 7:30am-5:30pm daily. You will have the option to play the back twice or just 9 at certain times. We look forward to seeing everyone soon! Also attached is a report from the lead agronomist for the Carolina’s Golf Association, Bert McCarthy. Anyone who has questions on what we have been going through to get the course ready should read the report. Our Superintendent, Jerry Brigman, and staff deserve a ton of credit for getting the course back to where it stands today with so little to work with. We still have a lot of work to do, but nothing that is insurmountable. We look forward to seeing everyone soon and appreciate your continued support.

Many thanks to “The Friends of The Black Mountain Golf Course” for their efforts on painting the exterior of our pro shop. While some like to sit back and complain, there are groups like this who engage and become part of the solution. This group came out two days before Helene hit and worked hard to clean up many areas of the course. Unfortunately, the storm erased most of the work that was done. This hasn’t lessened their eagerness to contribute. Moving forward, this group will have a golf committee that will work alongside town management and golf staff to accomplish projects that are deemed important. We look forward to this relationship and all that we can accomplish over the next few years.

As of 3:30pm today, the lifeblood of the course is finally pumping through our irrigation lines again! It’s been a long recovery and will continue to be for some time, but thanks to the Town Council, Town Management and Golf Course Management working in unison, we are making significant progress in reopening. We will now be able to begin safely stepping down our back 9 greens to playable height, as well as maintain consistent spray practices. We will also be working to bring the front nine playing surfaces down to a manageable length, while we try to fill equipment and staffing needs to realistically maintain 18 holes. Our maintenance building and front nine bridges were destroyed, so we will be addressing those issues over the next few months to work towards restoring the entire course. Thanks for your continued support and desire to have the course reopen. We look forward to seeing everyone soon! We will be posting a back 9 opening date early next week!

While we appreciate everyone’s eagerness to get the golf course open, we can not have non town insured people coming to the golf course with their own mowers and cutting. This is a liability issue at the simplest level and a turf grass health issue beyond that. Healthy fairways can not be cut down from 8-12” to 2 or 3” in one mow, without severely damaging the turf. The height will need to be stepped down. This also does nothing towards the reopening of the front nine holes. We have nowhere near the equipment needed to operate at 18 holes. Please know we appreciate your interest in helping, and at some point we may ask, but until then, do not come out with your personal equipment and mow any of the golf course property. Anyone violating this will be placed on trespass notice-arrest and could receive a large fine. Black Mountain Police have been notified and are aware of the issue.
