GROWING UP, I WANTED TO BE A FAMOUS SINGER. 🎤

I remember as a kid, I'd spend my time singing and creating songs on my karaoke machine and I thought that “being famous” was the ultimate goal of life.

I never dreamed of becoming an entrepreneur as an Eating Psychology and Diet Recovery coach, but I do remember the day it all became so clear to me; when I realized that this is actually what I was meant to do. It finally happened after I had my first daughter and decided to stay home.(Which was REALLY hard for me!)

After years struggling from disordered eating and crippling perfectionism- I realized I just couldn't do it anymore. I didn't want my daughter to grow up with a mom who constantly worried about food and her body image. So...I followed my heart and my gut, and jumped into becoming a certified Eating Psychology coach and opened my own coaching practice.

How about you... what did you want to be when you grew up?

You hike, you bike, you exercise, you joined that new gym, you eat “clean” and you “do good” all week… but your body doesn’t change. Why? 😩

I get how frustrating this can be.

When I was training for a fitness competition, my coach literally said, “Are you sure you aren’t cheating? You are looking a little bloated.”

I was following my meal plan to an exact science. (12 almonds per snack to be exact.)
I never missed a work out.

But, my body plateaued. It literally refused to lose anymore weight. My quads refused to tone up and get “in shape”.

Yet, fitness trainers, social media influencers, health guru‘s, doctors even, make it seem like you could easily just shape and trim up your body in whatever way you want if you just follow the exact plan that they give you.

This is such bu****it. You CAN be super healthy, take care of yourself and do all the “right things” and your body might not change the way you want it to.

When I stopped trying to obsessively change my physical body shape, and learned to accept my natural shape, I finally found peace.

I move my body in ways that bring me joy and pleasure. I take naps. I make my own kombucha, but I also eat ice cream with my kiddos a few times a week and skip the gym when I need to.

I know it can be really scary to “just be OK with yourself “. Our culture actually goes completely against it. But if you are constantly weighing yourself, constantly focusing on trying to change your body, always obsessing about how you wish your thighs were slimmer, you will NEVER 👎 find peace with food. And you certainly will never find peace and confidence with your body.

Self hate will never lead to self-love in confidence. ❤️

I would love to know, what are you afraid will happen if you start to accept your body as it is?

There has been an 83% increase in pediatric hospital admissions for eating disorders during the pandemic. 😬Wow.

Here's why you should give up dieting for you, and your family's health:

1. Parents' eating and dieting habits influence how their children eat.

"How a parent is eating, how they are buying, how they are preparing, how they are plating and how they are offering food influences the experience of the child in reference to food and body," Adolescent medicine physician Dr. Shelley Aggarwal said.

2. Weight has been OVERVALUED as a marker of health. (In our society AND especially medicine!) Many parents inadvertently pass on the wrongful messages of diet culture onto kids by using the word "health" as "code for thin."

3. Thin does not equal health! We need to shift away from using weight to indicate whether anyone is healthy, attractive or worthy. Parents should make clear to kids that no person's worth rests on their appearance, their weight or how or what they eat.

4. Focusing on eating 'healthy' can become problematic for families.

The pressure parents feel to raise "healthy" kids of a particular weight can lead them to adopt rigid approaches to meals and snacks, including rules such as saying "no dessert until you finish dinner," obsessing over nutritional information and categorizing foods as "good" or "bad."

These restrictions backfire! (I've seen this exact scenario with many of my adult clients!)

5. Restrictive feeding disrupts a child's innate ability to listen to their internal hunger and fullness cues and has been shown to be a risk factor for disordered eating and eating disorders.

Saying "sugar is bad" and "sugar will give you diabetes" does NOT work in the long term for kids and ends up making them feel guilty around food.

I know it can be challenging to navigate eating, health and weight in our society today, but you're not alone. Reach out or join the Food Freedom Confidence Facebook community where we talk about all these topics.

For me, giving up dieting doesn't mean I've given up on my family's health. Instead, we focus on a non-diet approach to our nutrition, fitness and well-being.

I hid my eating disorder and binge eating behaviors for ten years. 😱

People told me later they had no idea that I was secretly struggling with food and my weight for that long. Why? Because I was so scared and ashamed of asking for help.

The truth is, I wanted to ask for help. I wanted to get out of this crazy yo-yo weight cycle and all or nothing feeling around food. I wanted to stop hating my body.

But, my mind would stop me...What if I gain a ton of weight? What if people will think I'm a failure? What if I never get there? What if I'll never be happy?

I used these fearful questions and the fear responses that came along with them as obstacles to stop me from taking any action toward learning. I felt as though these questions that were coming up meant that I couldn’t take an action. I wanted them to go away before I took any steps.

The one thing I was avoiding was the key to me overcoming my fear. It sounds so obvious, but how many of us have wanted to do something, felt afraid, and then spent more time thinking and talking about it than actually taking action?

I put "get control of food" on my New Year’s resolution list for the last time and decided to find a way to make it happen, despite my fears, especially fear of the unknown. (What I REALLY needed/wanted was to learn how to have a better relationship with food and stop restricting, but I didn't know that at the time...)

In other words, any time you are afraid of taking almost any type of action, a significant source of your fear is a fear of failure.

But what if you COULD NOT FAIL?

Look 👀… when it comes to healing your relationship with food and breaking free from diet culture, you cannot fail. You are breaking free from the “black-and-white” thinking, the all or nothing, the crippling perfection. You cannot fail at this! Promise.

So today I can say I DO have total control over food. I have an easy, breezy relationship with food and my body that I never thought was possible.. I couldn’t have said that though had I just continued to wait to take action until I no longer felt afraid.

What action can you take to overcome your fear today?..

No crazy yoga poses.
No headstands.
No cool dance moves.
“No jumping up in the air” picture.
Just sitting still.
Going slow.
Recovering.
Healing.
Surrendering.

I don’t know how to do this.
I don’t think I ever actually have.
Sometimes life has other plans for you.
So here I am, in a new place
Learning to surrender.
Where are you learning to surrender in your life?

I’ve been struggling to find my words in many ways lately. 😞

I had a pretty traumatic event happen about a month ago that I’m still recovering from.

-It’s been hard for me to slow down and rest.
-It’s been hard to know how and what to share that feels authentic.

So, I will start slow. I will share bits and pieces of my healing journey.

I know that one of my gifts is the gift of being vulnerable. I feel like I have not been using or able to use that gift lately.

So today, even though I don’t really know the right thing to say, here’s to showing up anyway. ✌️

“Mommy, can we get some sun ☀️ on our tummies? Can I put my hand on your tummy?”

Feeling so blessed and grateful for this big girl.

Just a few years ago I would’ve cringed and felt ashamed at this small request. I would have felt bad and guilty that my stomach wasn’t more “flat and perfect.”

Today? No hesitation and just pure peace. 💜

Do you want to lose weight? 🙄
Do you want to stop feeling crazy around food?😵‍💫
Do you want to learn how to except your body? 👙

Here’s the thing, you can want to lose weight AND want to work on accepting your body. 🙌

The first mistake we see when it comes to having a positive body image is focusing on your body and wanting to “LIKE” the way you look. 👀

Did you know having a positive body image does NOT require thinking you’re sexy and loving your body?

Our mentor Summer Innanen says you need to “build a solid sense of self, so that appearance isn’t something you think about anymore.”

You must HEAL your unworthiness.

When it comes to healing your unworthiness, we must stop putting conditions around your acceptance. like, "I'll accept myself when...I've lost weight, when I can get off of medication, when I can fit into those shorts, etc."

This can be difficult to do alone, especially in a society and culture that is obsessed with appearances. 🙄

My partner and I are working on some big plans that we are announcing next week… so stay tuned!

Do you think it is possible to lose weight and also feel free around food?
