Yesterday we wrapped up our burns for the season. We got everything burned we wanted to (and nothing we didn’t 😉). We want to say a huge “thank you” to everyone who helped out!! We could NOT have done it without your help and expertise. Now, the fun begins as we get to watch things pop up from the blackened earth. Happy Spring!

After a LONG winter, we were excited to start up our spring burn season. We spent the past two days crossing some units off our list. Everyone worked so incredibly hard and we appreciate all their dedication. Some highlights of the past two days include some eagles soaring over during a burn, an adorable woolly bear caterpillar who hitched a ride on someone’s radio harness, and the first sighting of a frog for the year.

Free wood!!! We cut down a rather large black oak tree today. We have some nice 4-8 foot long pieces (the 8ft one is very straight) setting on the roadside across from the shed. Feel free to come and get it anytime. We would love for it to go to good use. We also have a 3 ft piece of cherry with two burls on it by the cabin. If you are interested in that please let me know and we can work out how to pick that one up.

We took advantage of the nice weather on Sunday (Nov 23) to do a prescribed burn at Black Earth Rettenmund prairie. The prairie has continuous fuel throughout most of it so we had a pretty seamless burn. With the help of the sunny, dry day and hard working crew, we had a successful fall burn. Thanks to everyone who took time out of their weekend to help!

It’s that time of the year to start seeing one of our favorites, the yellow and black garden spider. Such a fun one to see! Look for it as you hike the trails this month.

We love how much you love PVC. It truly is a special place. However, keep in mind that while it is open to the public it is not owned by the public and is a state natural area. Please do not move benches, throw rocks, take seed, hike off trail, etc. . . We want to be able to keep it open to everyone but when people do that, it makes us feel like the space is not respected and appreciated for what it is. Sounds cliche but really, when you come, please tread lightly and leave it the way you found it. You can always feel free to report any issues you see and we will make sure all questions/concerns are addressed. Thanks 😊

These are a few of our favorite things. The prairies are all aglow with pinks, purples, oranges, and yellows. Such a beautiful time of year.

Always a lovely sign of spring when you start to see those pops of color in the prairie 💛
