* CORNERING BASICS*
Key points for attacking a corner are:
- lower your center of gravity
- get to know the grip
- rapidly scan the trail and pick the right line
- weight/pressure distribution
1/ Set up the turn.
• Judge your speed
• Slow down using both brakes in a straight line
• Pick the right line though the turn (low, mid, high)
• Look though the turn and spot the exit
2/ Enter the turn
• Lay off the brakes or keep dragging that rear brake gently to control the speed though the turn. (!Avoid grabbing the front brake too much as this will stand the bike up and mess your turn!)
• Get into your favorite ready/attack position (low and wide)
• Initiate the lean by pushing and extending your inside arm on the grip. Try keeping the outside arm bent to avoid leaning with the bike.
• Look where you want to go! Try spotting the exit as soon as you can
3/ Make the turn
• Lower your COM (Center Of Mass). This will provide added range of movement and keep the bike planted into the ground for added stability.
• Remain centered over the BB distributing your weigh evenly between the front and the rear wheel
• Find the Apex of the turn and get heavy on your bike to increase traction and gain momentum. (Achieved by pushing the legs and resisting forces through the turn)
• Short turns will require a more violent/abrupt press compared to a long and mellow turn, where you can press for longer and more gradually.
• Try getting off the brakes before the apex to carry a much faster exit speed.
Off you go! Find a turn that has support and try sessioning it by gradually increasing speed, lean angle, how early can you get off those brakes, pressing harder though the turn.
Remember to experiment and have fun with it!!
