LACROSSE 🥍 MORE THAN A SPORT. IT’S A PIECE OF HISTORY.
Did you know lacrosse is one of the oldest team sports in North America?
Long before the game we know today, Indigenous peoples were playing versions of lacrosse. For the Haudenosaunee, the game holds deep cultural and spiritual meaning and is often known as the Creator’s Game or Medicine Game.
It was played for more than competition. It brought communities together, taught strength and endurance, and held ceremonial and healing significance.
This past summer, when the BisMan Rattlers hosted State Lacrosse, we were incredibly fortunate to have our closing ceremony include a traditional lacrosse ceremony shared by members representing:
Sisseton Wahpeton Dakota • Sicangu Lakota • Menominee • Meskwaki • Standing Rock Sioux Tribe • Sisseton-Wahpetonwan • Spirit Lake Oyate Dakota • Oglala Lakota • Puyallup • Ho-Chunk Nation
We were also honored to experience a cultural dance in full regalia performed by members of one of our very own BMLA families. 🧡
It was a powerful opportunity for our athletes and families to experience the culture, tradition and history behind the game we love.
🥍 We don’t just PLAY lacrosse.
We get to be part of a game with centuries of history, tradition and meaning.
As we work to grow lacrosse in our community, we also want to help our players and families understand, honor and respect where this incredible game came from.
