Your resume can be good as gold, and you still might not get the interview.

I need some of y’all to understand that fact before you start blaming the resume every time you don’t hear back.

There are too many things happening on the other side that you’ll never know about.

They may already have an internal candidate. Somebody could have a referral. The role could get put on hold. They could get 1000 applications. It may be a fake job.  

Yes, your experience is strong, but somebody else’s could’ve lined up better with what they needed.

That doesn’t mean you need to run back and rewrite your resume every time somebody doesn’t call. Some things are just out of your control.

Now if you’ve been consistently targeting roles you’re qualified for and still getting absolutely no traction after months/years on end, then yeah. We need to take another look at the resume and what you’re doing with it.

Your resume is one part of the process. Don’t expect it to carry your entire job search.

You still gotta stop overthinking, put yourself out there, and find the people who can get you closer to your target.

Your resume makes sense to you because YOU know what happened.

The reader wasn’t there. Give ‘em some context.

They don’t know the project was already 6 months behind when you took it over. They don’t know 2 people had already quit, the client was threatening to leave, or leadership tried to fix the problem 3 times before they delegated it to you.

So, when your bullet says you “successfully delivered the project on time and within budget,” you’re leaving out the very thing that takes it from “so what” to “hell yeah.”

Comb through your resume and find accomplishments where you might need to help the reader understand just how significant the outcome was.

They don’t need the whole backstory. Just give ‘em enough to understand what you were dealing with, what you did, and why the outcome was worth mentioning.

At some point, you gotta admit that you keep updating and editing and tailoring that resume because you’re hiding.

My overthinkers know exactly what I mean.

There’s always one more thing you can fix before you have to put yourself out there for somebody else to judge you.

So you move another bullet, change another word, run another scan, ask AI for another version, and spend 45 minutes deciding whether “led” or “directed” sounds better.

Days later, your resume is still sitting on your laptop instead of being used.

Before you touch it again, ask whether the change you’re considering will actually affect how someone understands your qualifications.

If it won’t, close that resume and hit send.

You’ll find a role in a different industry and immediately start focusing on the experience you don’t have.

Meanwhile, you’ve spent 15+ years leading teams, managing budgets, influencing executives, implementing technology, managing risk, or advising organizations through major changes.

Stop dismissing all that experience just because you did it somewhere else. Your first thought shouldn’t be, “I need another degree or certification.”

Go back to the roles you’re targeting and look at what they need this person to do. What problems are they hiring them to solve? What have you already done that shows you can handle that kind of work?

Now you can make those connections clear on your resume.

Sometimes you gotta change the language you’re using and put more emphasis on the parts of your experience that translate no matter where you work.

Someone outside your industry may not immediately see why an accomplishment is impressive without a lil context.

If you’ve been working for 15-20+ years, not every position deserves the same amount of space on your resume.

Some roles may have 5 or 6 bullets because there’s a lot of relevant stuff to talk about.

Another position may only have 2 bullets, while an older position only has the company, title, and dates.

In some cases, you need to delete the older roles altogether and bring anything super relevant from that time to the top in a career highlights section.

See, the amount of space something gets on your resume depends on how much it positions you for your target roles.

Pay attention to what you keep repeating, too.

If you’ve managed teams for the last 4 roles, the reader doesn’t need 4 versions of the same leadership story.

Use that space to show how your leadership changed as you moved up and to call out other experience that matters at your target level.

Every time I do these complimentary resume audits, the same thing happens.

I talk to them about their work, and they’re some real deal badasses.

Then, I read their resumes and they all sound like a job description or an internal corporate email.

If “utilized strategic methodologies to facilitate organizational alignment” would never come out of your mouth when you’re explaining your process to a colleague or industry peer, we probably don’t need that foolishness on your resume.

Professional language can still be YOUR language.

Do sum’n for me real quick.

Read your resume out loud. If you start fumbling over words or think, “I would never say that,” baby, rewrite it...expeditiously (in my best T.I. voice).

Some of the best evidence for your resume may come from work that was never in your job description.
If you’re anything like me, you became the person leadership called when something went sideways. ��
Have you trained people even though you weren’t the trainer?��.
Raise your hand if you inherited a mess because leadership trusted you to fix it. �
Think back to when you started getting pulled into decisions or projects outside your normal scope because people valued your insights and judgment.
Y’all, that stuff matters.
It can show trust, influence, leadership, expertise, and how your role grew beyond what you were originally hired to do.
Next time you open your resume, look at each position and ask yourself, “What did people start relying on me for that wasn’t originally part of my role?”
I bet you’ve got some gems hiding in that answer.

If you’ve been working for 15+ years, I promise you’ve forgotten some stuff.
In my 40s, I can barely remember what happened last month, let alone 10 years ago.
Here’s one of my favorite things to tell clients when they’re using AI to update their resumes.
Give AI some basic information (nothing private) about one of your roles and tell it to interview you. Prompt AI to ask what you fixed, built, changed, influenced, figured out, or were trusted to handle.
Then, make it ask follow-up questions based on your answers to help you uncover experience that better positions you for the target role.
Now, you have personalized career stories to include in your resume instead of AI fluff.

Everybody doesn’t know about your company.

A lot of companies are well known inside their industry but nowhere else.

This comes up a lot when I review resumes from people who’ve spent years working for smaller companies, startups, nonprofits, or privately held organizations.

Share some context about the company so the reader can quickly assess how your experience relates to the role.

You can include the industry, size, who the company serves, the territory, or something else that helps the hiring team get a feel for the environment you were working in.

You don’t need a whole paragraph taking up too much space talking about the company. A line or 2 will do.

Include just enough information so no one’s reading your experience without knowing what kind of operation you’re talking about.
