The Boxer with one of the greatest Left hooks of all time was raised by a Father without a Left hand . . .
Joe Frazier: “I grew up with my dad. We cooked liquor him and I. We cut the wood. We cut the junk up together, iron, cars and stuff, that was our living. We sold vegetables from the farm together. I stuck close to my dad and his way of living, man. I can’t be different. That’s the way I know how to live.
“He was a good man as far as people were concerned. He didn’t get into much trouble at all, but when he got into trouble he could deal with it. My father, his left arm, it was cut off about here (just above the wrist), he could take that arm, what we call a nub, he could push it through walls..
“He could tie his own shoes, he could shave himself. He had a false arm, but he’d only wear it once in a while, when we’d go to church or something. He lost it in a car accident. He would wash the cars, cut the grass, things need fixing around the house, he fixed it. Whatever needed to be done, we did together. Whatever needed to be done we took care of it. But that’s how I learned, my dad, stuck close to him. Any person in the world I’d rather be, I’d like to be my dad. He was a great guy.”
The man who lost his left arm raised the one that would have the most devastating left hook in the history of the sport.
