The first time I stepped onto the mats, I was 43 years old.
It was exactly one week before my 44th birthday. Signing up was my present to myself.
At the time, the voice in my head wouldn't shut up:
“Lisa, you are way too old for this. You won’t even make a decent white belt.”
And then reality hit me:
I was going to turn 44 anyway.
I’d rather turn 44 as a complete beginner on the mats than spend the rest of my life being the person who never tried.
My initial push was not fitness; it was survival.
After a scary encounter with a creepy guy at a gas station, I realized a hard truth: carrying pepper spray in your purse guarantees nothing. When you're cornered by surprise, you rarely have time to dig through a bag.
Your only real defense is what your body knows how to do under pressure.
As an introvert and a perfectionist, Jiu-Jitsu was the most uncomfortable thing I had ever done. But that discomfort is what saved me.
On the mats, your brain doesn't have room for anxiety, bills, or everyday noise. It’s the only place where the world goes completely silent and you are forced to be 100% present.
Today, over a decade later, the woman who just wanted to learn self-defense and run back home owns her own academy, running Gulf Coast Jiu-Jitsu and watching kids and adults build unbreakable confidence every single day.
Time is going to pass anyway. You can keep making excuses, or you can take the first step today.
Whether it’s on the mats, in the weight room, or starting something you’ve put off for years:
