A few tidbits from the Class A championship game Saturday:
▪️It’s the 3rd consecutive year the Eastern A won the championship (Central, 2018; Miles City, 2019)
▪️ Saturday is the 27th time a team from the Eastern A has won the championship since the MHSA adopted the four-class format in 1973. Laurel’s 2002 title was as a member of the Central A and not counted towards that number.
▪️The 34-point margin is tied for third largest since 1973. Sidney’s 41-0 win over Stevensville in 1982 and Miles City’s 43-7 win over Havre in 1994 are the only larger title game victory margins. Dillon defeated Billings Central 44-10 in 2011.
▪️Saturday’s shut out was the 7th since 1973 and first since Miles City won the 2010 title 8-0 at Billings Central.
▪️For the 12th time in 19 years, the road team has won the championship. That stretch began with Laurel defeating Havre in Havre, 21-19, in 2002.
▪️Laurel avenged a September loss to Billings Central with Saturday’s win. They did the same in their 2002 title run after losing to Havre in September of that season before winning the title.
▪️The 34 points are the most scored by Laurel in their 4 title game appearances (3-1). It’s also tied for the second most allowed by Billings Central in a championship game. Behind Dillons’ 44 points in 2011, Havre put up 34 in their 2004 championship game win against the Rams.
