6 months ago I had an aortic dissection, rupture of the upper aorta, and subsequent emergency open heart surgery and coronary artery bypass.

My cardiologist: “Maybe you should find a new sport.”
Me: You don’t know me that well...or my friends...or the miracles I’ve seen God already work in my life.

These 6 months have been TOUGH. I am left with a fully dissected aorta, take blood pressure medicine that has crappy side effects, and more. But I’m alive and not giving up. I have done 7 Spartan races so far with many more scheduled. Let me be clear...I can only “do” what God allows me to do within His sovereignty. My part is to have faith, eat healthy, and keep grinding. I’m far from perfect but I continue on within God’s grace and mercy. Thank you to all of the family and friends who have helped and supported me through this...there’s too many to list and I couldn’t do it without you!

That finish line feeling is tough to beat! Happy Friday everybody!📸 =

For the friendship. For the challenge. For the pictures. For the medals. For your health... Whatever your reason, you’ve got to get out there and push yourself. As my friend says, “Be relentless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire.”

𝐒𝐏𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐀𝐍 𝐌𝐎𝐍𝐓𝐀𝐍𝐀!!! A tough but incredible weekend. My beautiful bride did the beast with me and then Sunday I donned the red headbands for age-group. It was 5 months and 10 days after my aortic dissection and subsequent emergency open heart surgery and coronary artery bypass. I had to do 210 burpees and 4 penalty loops for the obstacles that I wasn’t allowed to do, but I freaking did it in a competition wave less than 6 months post-op!

Special thanks to my good friend and Jake Simmons who sacrificed their own finish times in order to keep an eye on me as I attempted the stricter age-group wave where you can’t receive assistance. Special thanks as well to fellow heart warrior who runs - he stuck around for support and to help capture the weekend...more of his amazing photos to come!

Please check out my amazing sponsors and partners who are helping to make this possible for me:

So...I saw a specialist at Duke University. Here’s the low down:⁣

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐮𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐠𝐧𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐬:⁣
I have a fully dissected aorta...not just the Type A dissection that was repaired in November. I CURRENTLY have a “complex network” of additional dissections and false lumens in my descending aorta all the way into my hips.⁣

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐬:⁣
It happened in November - we just didn’t know about it until an abdominal CT scan was performed. No aneurysms were found and I am cleared to run and to exercise with no HR restrictions. I am also allowed to do push-ups/burpees and to lift up to half of my body weight.⁣

𝐑𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭:⁣
-Heavy lifting (ie Spartan tire flip) is banned for life.⁣
-Pull-ups and hanging obstacles are banned for me until at least 2022.⁣
-As such, I will not be able to compete at Savage Race, Indian Mud Run, etc.⁣

𝐌𝐲 𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧:⁣
-I intend to still do a LOT of races. Since they have the burpee penalty - I can still do those and feel like I truly earned it if I do the penalties.⁣
-At OCRWC, will be taking my place on the 15k and I will serve as his guide. I will still do (parts) of the charity race!⁣

This is just another obstacle. See you on the Spartan course! 𝐓𝐨 𝐆𝐨𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐲.⁣

Who’s ready to take their shot this year? Put your goals in the comments below for accountability. Mine? I made them before leaving the hospital: Lord willing, I want to be the first person to complete OCR World Championships and Spartan Trifecta World Championships less than a year after open heart surgery. It’s scary because right now I can’t lift much more than 20-25 pounds and certain muscles (such as my right hip and right pectoral) aren’t even working correctly. But, the healthy pressure is good...you have to set goals that SCARE you or else you won’t change. Then you have to put in the work. I will...who’s joining me?

Teamwork. That’s what it’s all about with More Heart Than Scars. Zach Paben, Joey McGlamory and the rest of the heroes of MHTS gave Erika Bogan and I a weekend we won’t forget. With their help we were able to do about 75% of the obstacles this weekend...something we wouldn’t have been able to do on our own. If you have visible or invisible scars and need help - reach out! If you’d like to donate or sponsor someone - reach out! We’re all in this together. Say it with me below: “More Heart _______!”
