Second Nature Adventure Challenge

Second Nature Adventure Challenge The Second Nature Adventure Challenge works to get people outside and active on trails in the Maine West region. Every trail you log helps us to reach our goal.

The Second Nature Adventure Challenge works to get more people outside and active on trails in the Maine West region, which includes the River Valley, Greater Bethel , and Oxford Hills areas. Across the region there are opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to get outside, whether it's a relaxed walk on a flat path, a hike up a rugged mountain, riding through the woods on a mountain b

ike, or paddling a river trail. Sign up on our website and track your trail adventures on Maine Trail Finder. Once we get there, local charities get money! Win-win! Give back when you get outside! The Second Nature Adventure Challenge is a project of Maine West, a partnership of local and regional organizations dedicated to addressing systemic rural challenges and enhancing community well-being in western Maine through increased collaboration across the economic, education, health, and conservation sectors. The project is managed by the Oxford County Wellness Collaborative.

Have you heard about this new hiking program in the Bethel area? Seems like a great way to get out with a group now that the weather is getting warmer and the trails are drying out.

Now that the weather is so nice, are you looking to get outside for a walk or hike? Interested in making new friends? Thank you to Sue Radway for organizing this series of Hikes for All Ages. EVERYONE is welcome to join in these informal get togethers in the outdoors. Feel free to share this calendar for the the Week of May 4th. Keep an eye out for each week's update. See you soon!

A great reminder from our friends at Inland Woods + Trails!

🍁 Fall leaves are gorgeous—but they can hide roots, rocks, and slippery spots. Always hike carefully. And remember: behind every safe trail is a crew who worked hard to clear the way.

Table Rock is Grafton Notch is a beautiful place to take in the fall foliage, if you're up for a bit of climb.
The orange trail up is short and steep, with lots of stairs, some scrambling, and a large slab cave area to explore (careful in there--there are some steep drops). We'd not recommend descending on this trail unless you are very fit and stable on your feet.
The blue/white trail is a little longer and much less intense, leading you through lovely forest. You can find more info here: https://www.mainetrailfinder.com/trails/trail/grafton-notch-state-park-baldpate-mountain-and-table-rock-loop

Fall sunsets provide beautiful golden light that makes the beauty of Western Maine breathtaking. We highly suggest you find a west-facing view near sunset to drink in this beauty. Remember to pack a headlamp because the trip down might be dark and we want you to be safe!

These photos were taken on Streaked Mountain in South Paris. Other west-facing views that come to mind include Long Mountain in Bethel, Bucks Ledge in Woodstock, and Albany Mountain in Albany Township.

There are new benches along the trail at Shepard's Farm Preserve in Norway so that you can sit to rest your legs, admire the view, compose a poem, replay old arguments in your head and come up with perfect comebacks, or whatever else you might want to take a break for.

Sure...you can hike in Crocs or flip-flops. But should you? Probably not. It's a good idea to be prepared even for short adventures with the right footwear, essential supplies, and planning.

You can find some guidance from the Maine Warden Service here: https://www.maine.gov/ifw/keepers/scenarios/hiking-preparedness.html

Be safe out there, friends!

Swimming is one of the best things about summer--are we right? (Yes, we are).

We're lucky to have lots of options, from rivers to lakes to frigid pools that tumble down mountains. Coos Canyon is a stand-out swimming hole though, and worth the drive.
