A snowy afternoon rifle hunt mentoring a friend who has been dying to go out. With a little pop up blind that's a hair too short to be effective and my trusty 30-30 to share we sat and enjoyed the sunset. Towards the very end when only a few moments of legal light lasted, we went for a walk and I showed her what signs to look for, of which we found two active buck scrapes and tracks galore from the night prior. Eventually we kicked up a doe, but she was too far out too fast to make any kind of ethical shot. So we watched her bound away.

I've never tried rabbit nor gumbo before, and I definitely never tried to cook either as well. Cajun cuisine is somewhat alien to me in a way. As a northerner of German/Irish/Ukrainian descent I'm much more familiar with the copious use of cabbage, potatoes and vinegar as dish Mainstays. Cajun being a blend of rustic southern and french is damn near the polar opposite. That being said, it is always something I admired greatly and I still would love to feast within the heart of it one day. Until then - I must try my hand at it myself.
Following a recipe from the Meat eater Cook book by Steve Rinella I was able to, I think successfully, make a nice rabbit gumbo. As sides we have fried okra and of course some sweet cornbread with honey butter to compliment the mild spice.
I can tell you my two year old nephew thought it was the best thing ever, but he's a fairly inexperienced food critic at this time.

Had an amazing day with the American Daughters of Conservation - PA chapter and Delta Waterfowl who put on a great waterfowl workshop. I have been wanting to try my hand at it for a few years now but having no waterfowl hunters in my family nor amongst my very few hunting friends there has been a scarce opportunity to really dig in. To my bank accounts disdain, it was an absolute blast of a time and I learned enough to be able to try it by myself (though I still say it's infinitely more fun with buddies and dogs)

In the woods or at home, we need your help!

Recently, epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD), a fast-acting and often fatal virus affecting white-tailed deer, has been confirmed in several western counties and is being investigated in some southeastern counties.

EHD is spread by tiny biting midges or “no-see-ums”, that typically appear in late summer. They continue to remain a threat until a hard frost. Infected deer can show swelling of the face or neck, loss of appetite, weakness, lameness, and excessive salivation.

Currently, EHD detections include: Butler, Erie, Lawrence, and Mercer counties.

We are asking the public to report any sick or dead deer, especially if multiple animals are found in the same area. These reports are critical for tracking and responding to outbreaks. You can report 24/7 to 1-833-PGC-WILD.

For additional details, visit: http://bit.ly/4noHQGn.

We will provide additional updates regarding EHD detections as they become available.

Thank you for doing your part to protect wildlife and support healthy white-tailed deer herds — a shared responsibility for all Pennsylvanians.

Yesterday was a surprisingly cool morning here in PA, so the deer were moving around a bit more. I had two handsome visitors in the early morning in the way of two 6s, and then a fawn with its mamas decided it was the perfect spot for an afternoon nap.
