Waterside Workshops engages youth and the community through hands-on learning in bicycle mechanics, wooden boatbuilding, and outdoor education. Waterside is a safe place for youth to feel heard, gain confidence, develop work skills, and access the tools and resources needed to lead healthy, sustainable lives. Street Level Cycles is a full service bike shop that also serves as our bicycle education

, repair, and reuse program. Working alongside skilled instructors, our youth interns learn professional bike repair by refurbishing used bicycles, which are distributed back to the community as affordable, sustainable transportation. Youth also help community members fix their own bicycles in our do-it-yourself Open Shop workspace. Our retail bike shop is open Wednesday through Sunday, 12-6pm, and our Open Shop hours are Saturday and Sunday, 12-6pm. Berkeley Boathouse fills the void left by the loss of woodworking classes in local high schools. In this program, youth work alongside our skilled instructors learning carpentry and traditional wooden boat building. When weather permits, interns take our fleet of boats paddling and sailing on the Berkeley Aquatic Park and San Francisco Bay. Youth interns and staff also provide boat rentals to the general public and help conduct field trips for groups of youth from partner organizations.

🌱 Know a young person looking for real-world experience this fall? Waterside Workshops new GreenWorks Internship, offered in partnership with City of Berkeley YouthWorks, is hiring 5 interns for a paid internship in climate, environment, and green infrastructure.

Interns must be ages 14 to 24. The internship pays $19.61 an hour for 4 hours of work a week, running September through January. Along the way, interns will get hands-on with landscaping, farm-to-table cooking, food systems, park improvements, and community engagement, plus mentorship and professional development.

This isn’t just an internship. It’s a front-row seat to what a career in sustainability could look like.

Happy National Nonprofit Day!

Today we’re taking a moment to say thank you. To every volunteer who’s shown up at Open Shop, every parent who’s signed their kid up for camp, every donor who believed in what we’re building, and every young person who’s found confidence in a bike they fixed or boat they built with their own hands: you are Waterside Workshops .

Nonprofits like ours don’t run on good intentions alone. We run on community. And right now, we need you again.

Our Land & Sea Party is coming up on September 19, and it’s one of the biggest ways we keep our programs strong for the year ahead. Grab your ticket, donate an auction item, sponsor us, or just spread the word. However you show up, it helps keep kids building, sailing, learning, and growing.
