Last weekend Cal Cycling hosted our home road race with . The roadies put in a huge amount of work setting up for the both the road race and the crit. Berkeley Hills had a history of being one of the biggest road races in the state and we’re proud to host it.

The bears got to roll out of bed and ride to the start line from home. Crushing it on a course they seem to ride every day, Aaron won the Cat 4 race and Leo got 5th in the Cat 3 omnium! For some of our riders it was their first road race. Freshman Wilson decided to crawl out of the dungeons of bicycal and give racing bikes a shot! Here’s what he had to say “For a first road race and first crit, this was definitely one of my favorite experiences in Cal Cycling. Didn’t place as well as I expected but 10/10 would do it again next year!!”

Thank you all for coming out and supporting the next generation of cyclists!

Last weekend, Cal Cycling joined other teams from the WCCC for a memorial ride in honor of Colin Kang. We met up in Santa Cruz and rode his favorite trails as one big group. It was a great time getting to know everyone’s connection to Colin and see what a pillar of the community he was. We are so happy to have gotten to ride with such a wonderful person and gotten to come together as a community to honor him. Thank you to and for hosting us and helping us put on this wonderful event

Today we’d like to highlight freshman Aaron Leopold for the insanse run he’s been on! From podiuming at Davis, riding with pros at huffmaster and tackling gravel nationals all on his own! Here’s what he had to say for his first year on the team “The season kicked off with a great race alongside Cal Cycling at the UC Davis Flatlands. The pace was fast, positioning was key, and it all came down to a final field sprint where I finished 2nd in the collegiate category.
My first gravel race of the season was Huffmaster — a super competitive event featuring riders like Brennan Wertz and Lachlan Morton. It was an awesome day on the bike with perfect weather and great roads. The race split up after a 10-minute climb about halfway through, and from there, we rolled to the finish in small groups. I ended up 18th in the pro men’s category.
Next, I headed out to Turkey, Texas, for the inaugural Collegiate Gravel National Championships. The race started hard, but unfortunately, I had a mechanical within the first mile and had to stop for a few minutes to fix it. I spent most of the day riding solo, picking off riders one by one, and finished 31st. Despite the setback, I was happy with my effort and had a great experience overall. I’m really looking forward to the rest of the season with Cal Cycling.”

Cal cycling had a restful holiday season! Whether enjoying retirement on the north shore or checking out the local goods, we enjoyed our time outside the classroom. While the roadies wake up and learn how to ride their bikes for the upcoming race season, the mountain bikers have taken their talents off the bikes! Let’s see what Berkeley local Neel Chandran did this break.
“This break, I had to fix up the damage caused eroding the hillside and causing the landslide on Wildcat road. When I wasn’t shoveling dirt, our pals at showed me how to regulate ocean beach on a Wavestorm!” Neel refused comment on whether or not he actually rode his bike this winter. With the school year coming up, be sure to pay attention to our spring recruitment, starting with tabling on Sproul tomorrow morning!

This Cal cycling is most thankful for our fellow WCCC teams(even Stanford!), because no one wants to ride alone. When asked what he was thankful for Sophomore Grant Hough said, “I’m grateful for wet diagonal roots, buttercup stems (mid-ride fuel), and Justin Peck’s beautiful face to look forward to after climbs.” Tag your below🦃

Our Crowdfunding campaign is ends Friday 11/21! Every contribution is helpful. Your donations will help fund our travel, housing, and entry fees at all of the WCCC races. Cal Cycling prides itself on being able to make the wonderful sport of cycling more accessible for students, and your donations are critical in that! Find the link to donate in our bio and the pinned comment.

Here’s a statement from Sophomore Neel Chandran about what Cal Cycling means to him: “Without having the team help bring me across California to race, I would have never been able to explore cool places like Blue Lake, Exchequer, or TDS! I was the only one in my family to mountain bike, so having a community of people to explore all these world class riding destinations is awesome!” Donate to Cal Cycling to help support our riders like Neel!
