Today we’d like to highlight freshman Aaron Leopold for the insanse run he’s been on! From podiuming at Davis, riding with pros at huffmaster and tackling gravel nationals all on his own! Here’s what he had to say for his first year on the team “The season kicked off with a great race alongside Cal Cycling at the UC Davis Flatlands. The pace was fast, positioning was key, and it all came down to a final field sprint where I finished 2nd in the collegiate category.
My first gravel race of the season was Huffmaster — a super competitive event featuring riders like Brennan Wertz and Lachlan Morton. It was an awesome day on the bike with perfect weather and great roads. The race split up after a 10-minute climb about halfway through, and from there, we rolled to the finish in small groups. I ended up 18th in the pro men’s category.
Next, I headed out to Turkey, Texas, for the inaugural Collegiate Gravel National Championships. The race started hard, but unfortunately, I had a mechanical within the first mile and had to stop for a few minutes to fix it. I spent most of the day riding solo, picking off riders one by one, and finished 31st. Despite the setback, I was happy with my effort and had a great experience overall. I’m really looking forward to the rest of the season with Cal Cycling.”
