As a new teacher, it’s so hard to find your true place in this industry, especially in a trend boom.

My advice, as someone who has been teaching for nearly 20 years and has owned a private studio for 10 years, is to look closely at what is not working for you to figure out where your skills will shine and be the most economically viable and sustainable.

My group classes always were ok but from very early on I had private clients lining up and a waitlist. I listened and turned that into a small but very solid 6-figure biz.

Listen, watch, and understand your strengths. 💪💙💪

It’s a job.

A job we can love and feel deeply passionate about, but a job nonetheless.

In other fields, career paths are more prescribed, so business education and career skill-building may not be as necessary; but in this industry, there are about 19,789 ways to craft a career, so we need some savvy under our leggings right out of the gate. 😬

Aside from some very serious work about pay that I believe this industry needs to do, what do we as teachers expect to make?

In all honesty I think people enter in to teaching with a very skewed or incomplete picture of what this job entails and also what a reasonable pay rate is for the work.

I know, the cost of living is bonkers, but the idea of fair pay for this job sometimes seems a little delulu. 😬

Yes you need to know your anatomy and that you probably shouldn’t teach short spine to an 80 year old osteoporotic client BUT you also need to know how to manage the money you are already making or will make.

I don’t think we need another pre-made course on how to increase revenue teaching, post more, or be more confident teaching.

We need an informal space to talk to other people who are going through it with a person or people who are a few steps ahead in their career.

I’ve gotten a ton of interest about the rental model for both teachers and owners so that could be a cool place to start.

Or how to effectively track your income to know which lever to pull to make your next career move.

Or how to set up a transition plan from W2 employee to solo teacher.

Sure, I could build a course. I can build 10.

But I’d rather know what YOU ACTUALLY NEED rather than trying to sell you something that doesn’t quite fit your problem.

If you want a consistent client base, consistent income, and consistent biz growth, you'll have to be consistent with your teaching schedule.

Shocking, I know 😬

I will say, after 10 years of owning a studio and almost 20 years of teaching, yes, I have the flexibility to take a day off or cancel a client or class if something comes up in my life.

But the reason I can do that and not stress about my business is that I have an extremely consistent schedule that has been built over many years with a financial model that allows for sick days, vacations, and other last-minute time off needs.

The bottom line is, if you want clients to show up, you need to show up as well 😉💙💪

Part of your preparation and training to be a teacher is first figuring out what being a teacher means in your life.

Financially, logistically, energetically…

Yes, I think the industry as a whole can step it up in terms of giving teachers career skills, but doing your due diligence about the shape of a teacher’s life is a must.

(And yes finding that out requires more than scrolling on here 😉💙😬)
