Berkeley Yongmudo UC Berkeley Yongmudo Club teaches self-defense to the students, faculty, and community members of UC Berkeley.

History of Berkeley Yongmudo: In 1974 Dr. Ken Min started the Hapkido club to join the existing Kendo, Karate, Judo, and Korean Karate (later Taekwondo) clubs. This club has taught self-defense techniques and promoted the academic study of self-defense. Over the years, the club has changed names from Hapkido to Hankido and most recently Yongmudo. It has continued to serve its mandate of teaching s

elf-defense to the students, faculty, and community members of UC Berkeley. Since 1977, over 150 people have successfully tested for a dan rank in this program.

Sparring should be fun! Our kicking and punching round is for intermediate and advanced students in competition, but is accessible to everyone in class! We focus on ensuring we can dynamically respond to our opponent’s attacks.

Learning the right techniques as a response to a trigger moment is key to being able to respond in the moment! In this example, our head instructor executed a secondary technique (turning back or turning side) in response to an initial roundhouse.

In a facility, our size, we can often leverage more traditional training techniques, like working in parallel. In this case, we’re drilling kicks while lined up in rows. This often gives students the ability to observe lots of different people around them and pick up tiny improvements to their techniques while getting a lot of reps in.

“Battle throws” is a colloquial way to refer to a broad class of throws that don’t involve taking other people’s weight on yours. Whether you’re a small person or just wanting to conserve your energy, these throws are a great set of tools for your self-defense toolkit!

When grappling, you’ll want as many tools in your tool belt as possible! This escape leverages the knee to go over your opponent’s leg to escape the guard and slip to side mount.
