Marshall County Hapkido Academy "Master the art of self-defense with the power of hapkido!" About Me

Welcome to Marshall County Hapkido Academy.

My name is Sabumnim (Master) Wes Sutton, and I am a Hapkido Master Instructor and Certified Self-Defense Instructor with over 25 years of experience in martial arts, military combat training, and personal development. My journey began in childhood with Ishinryu Karate and continued through generations of martial tradition in my family. My grandfather was a Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, and knife-fighting instr

uctor in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, and my mother passed down some of the skills he taught her. I built on those foundations with high school wrestling, then advanced my training in the Marine Corps, where I learned the LINE combat system of the early 1990s. Following my service, I became a full-time Military Police officer in the Army National Guard, gaining experience in joint locks, takedowns, and arrest techniques. After experiencing combat in Desert Storm, I turned to martial arts to help manage PTSD—and that’s when I discovered Hapkido. With my background, the art came naturally, and it became a vital part of my healing journey. Today, as the founder and head instructor at Marshall County Hapkido Academy, I offer classes to students ages 4 and up. I welcome anyone who is willing to learn, regardless of age, sex, color, creed, or cultural background. My goal is not only to teach effective self-defense but to foster confidence, support mental health, improve physical fitness, and build a strong community of individuals committed to self-improvement. Whether you're just beginning or continuing your martial arts journey, I’m honored to help guide and support you every step of the way.

MST Sutton and Mr Terry Britton having to much fun while he works on this technique. This is a throw, but can be turned into a takedown as you roll and end up in the full mount. As we get older and our backs stop cooperating it's a good idea to work with mats, so you can continue to train in a safe environment. This does not replace actual breakfalls, but is used as a learning tool as the first step in actual flip falls. Once I'm comfortable in a student's skill the crash mats disappear.

5th Degree Black Belt in Hapkido IHF

Master Wes Sutton is the owner and chief instructor of Mu Yong Kwan Marshall County Hapkido Academy (also known as Benton Self Defense Academy) in Benton, Kentucky. With over 27 years of dedicated martial arts training and ranks in four different arts, Master Sutton brings a wealth of real-world experience to his students of all ages — from children to adults.

A combat MEU(SOC) Marine, Master Sutton served with both the 24th MEU(SOC) and the 26th MEU(SOC). He deployed with Hotel Battery, 3rd Battalion, 12th Marines (Hotel 3/12) during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. He later served as a Military Police officer in the Michigan Army National Guard. This multi-generational legacy of service runs deep: his grandfather was a Judo and knife-fighting instructor in the Marine Corps, his aunt also served as a Marine, and his mother became proficient in Judo under her father’s training.

His military background, combined with his lifelong commitment to discipline, resilience, and practical self-defense, shapes his teaching style. He specializes in effective joint locks, throws, striking, and weapons training (including short stick and riot baton), emphasizing techniques that work under real stress.

Master Sutton founded the academy to provide the Marshall County community with honest, no-nonsense self-defense training that builds confidence, fitness, and mental toughness. His program welcomes everyone — kids learning focus and respect, teens building discipline, and adults seeking practical skills for real life. Recent promotions and special offers (including free uniforms with sign-ups and two-week trials) have helped grow the school with motivated new students.

Outside the dojang, Master Sutton is a 100% Permanent & Total disabled veteran who manages service-related challenges through continued training and discipline. He lives in Benton, KY with his family and enjoys raising his juvenile female bearded dragon in a custom bioactive enclosure. A fiscal conservative and social liberal with strong traditional values, he draws on biblical principles of leadership, family, and personal responsibility.

Whether you're looking to build unbreakable self-confidence, improve your fitness, or learn skills that could one day save your life, Master Sutton and the Mu Yong Kwan team are ready to welcome you to the academy.
Train with purpose. Live with strength.

Our Hapkido Kids learning and practicing their back fall on our new crash mats.

Working with the kids on break falls which is absolutely one of the most important skills to learn in Hapkido. In Hapkido we do a lot of throwing,so knowing how to land without getting hurt is important. Not only is it important in martial arts training, but in life as well. Once these skills are learned and become habits you are less likely to be injured slipping on ice or tripping on a curb.
