Praised for its simplicity, tenkara is the traditional Japanese form of fly-fishing that uses minimum equipment consisting of a rod, a line, and a fly (no reel). Unlike western fly-fishing, tenkara uses no reel and its light weight, elegantly simplistic design allows users to take a more minimalistic approach to fishing, spending less time setting up equipment and more time in the water. Dan Pierc
e is the owner and founder of Maine Tenkara Guide and the first registered Maine fishing guide to guide exclusively tenkara. Dan was introduced to the tenkara method of fly-fishing over 10 years ago and has been doing it exclusively for over 6 years primarily in the rivers and lakes of North Western Maine. He specializes in group and one on one instruction of tenkara techniques as well as on water guiding.
"Maine is my home state, where I guide and fish the waters for beautiful native brook trout, landlocked salmon, and smallmouth bass. I am passionate about teaching tenkara, and outside of guiding, my full-time job is as a counselor at a local middle school. When people asked at fly fishing shows where they could find a guide in Maine, I saw an opportunity and jumped on it! Tenkara is great for people who are new to the sport of fly fishing because there is a quick learning curve if you have someone knowledgeable with you. I specialize in instruction for both children and adults and would look forward to sharing tenkara with you."
