Right now, somewhere in America, there is a family driving home from the shootout. Everyone is tired and possibly frustrated. With 1600+ entries and only 6 winners, the majority of teams went home defeated. Each year I observe etiquette at the scales and the interactions between parents and their kids. Sometimes it’s heartbreaking. The results aren’t always there to match the financial and time effort that parents put in. But that’s really ok, you’re racing because it’s supposed to be fun, something the family can do together. Your kid has no concept of how much things cost? They don’t have a job or pay bills, they don’t understand taking 10 days off of work, driving all day Sunday to go back to work on Monday. You see, your child showed up to have fun, you showed up to win. I’m not saying your kid doesn’t want to win. But congratulate them on small achievements, encourage them, never forget to tell them how proud you are. You’re not going to win them all. Even if you dominated every other race all year, spent a million dollars and drive the house car from Heaven!!! It won’t always be your day, but it will always be your kid!!! Take time to love them in every situation, make absolutely sure they know how proud you are, keep working hard and come back next year with a new outlook and have some fun! Safe travels to everyone!!
Winning might mean $2500 and bragging rights. Losing the relationship with your kid is priceless.
