If the focus is always on the scoreboard - you'll miss the real stories.
Yesterday the Bombers had the privilege of playing against a Bethlehem team that went to the Cal Ripken World Series Finals round last year. The final score was 11-1. Only 5 runs were earned.
The reality is our kids make physical errors, mental errors, and have moments of laziness. That's the importance of having the opportunity to play, to be coached up, and to learn through failure at this age. They are 9, 10, 11, and 12... It's all part of their development, all part of growth, all part of the process of becoming coachable, learning accountability, and improving their skill. Their journey is one of trial by fire against teams that are the best around. Competition is tough, the coaching is tough, and they're all better for it. Growth isn't easy
Below is a video of "the GOAT" CJ. Here he is making a play to his backhand side, squaring up the ball, setting his feet, and throwing a dart to get the runner out at first. The throw isn't from little league distance, it's from a 50/70 field distance taking him away from first base. Never ceases to amaze us.
You'd miss Canton and Lincoln - two 9yr olds squaring up against an 11u World Series team. Canton ripping a line shot only to get robbed by a diving third baseman. Then going going out on the hill and getting 2 outs in 5 pitches & a diving catch in center to rob a line drive base hit.
You'd miss Cooper and Liam two 11yr olds from Bennington pitching through 7 defensive errors- holding a World Series team to 5 earned runs despite all the challenges our pitchers face. You'd miss Liam yanking and cranking a liner down the left field line for his first hit as a Bomber.
You'd miss Jase - (brand new to travel ball) roping one caught by the shortstop. Max (only 10) ripping one that ate up the second baseman. Brycen, Gavin, Lincoln, making the defense earn it. Matthew applying what we worked on with runners on base to the game. Myles making an incredible spinning play in the hole at second.
The story - a bunch of kids from rural towns in VT/NY, against the odds, showed they can compete with the best in the country.
Is it fun to lose? Heck no.
Is it fun watching a group of underdog kids competing, learning, failing collectively but improving individually... 100%.
Opportunity. Hard work. Failure. Opportunity. Growth. Hard Work. Failure. Opportunity. Growth. Belief. Hard work. Failure.
The rest sorts itself out.
Gloves up!
