This week we're heading to Maine to meet Claire Loon Baldwin, a watercolor artist, writer, and natural science illustrator who has spent quite a bit of time exploring some pretty wild places! 🏔️

Probably like 5 years ago, we got to see her skills in person when Claire sent us the nicest, most beautiful postcard in the mail with her artwork and a note about her interest in collaborating with us. Pretty excited that we’re finally making it happen!

Claire specializes in detailed watercolor botanicals and biodiverse landscapes, drawing inspiration from her years working in national parks across the US. She's worked in Glacier, North Cascades, and Grand Canyon National Parks, where she was even a park ranger! In 2018, she created Grand Canyon's centennial poster series.

But this year, her adventures took her somewhere a little farther north. Ok maybe a lot farther north…

Claire traveled to Northeastern Greenland to document the scientists working at Zackenberg Research Station. It's a remote Arctic research station with no roads, where polar bears, arctic wolves, and musk oxen roam under the midnight sun. The scientists there track thousands of climate variables to help us understand the future of our planet.

Claire’s job? She's turning the experience into an illustrated children's book about the scientists working at the ends of the earth. Umm can adults order it too? 🐻‍❄️

Ok, a few fun facts about Claire:
-One meal forever: Oysters! Raw, smoked, in a stew, you name it. There's even a spot near her in Maine where you can pick your own oysters and leave cash in a jar.
-Favorite wildflower: Paintbrush, also called prairie fire. She first fell in love with these colorful little flowers in Glacier National Park and loves how they manage to thrive in harsh alpine environments.

This week we're heading to the Methow Valley near Washington's North Cascades to meet watercolor artist Bethany Wray! 🏔️

Bethany paints the landscapes of the Pacific Northwest using bright, saturated colors and crisp, clean edges. Not exactly the easiest thing to pull off with watercolor, a medium that tends to have a mind of its own!

She's called quite a few places home over the years: San Diego, Los Angeles, Seattle, Leavenworth, and now the Methow Valley. Each move has pushed her to grow, both personally and as an artist. Looking back, she's especially proud of having the courage to make those changes and let her art evolve along the way.

Oh, and here's a fun fact! Bethany used to drive a large, renovated school bus around LA teaching kids basic woodworking skills for a nonprofit called Side Street Projects. A woodworking classroom on wheels! 🚌

Ok, a few more fun facts about Bethany:
-One meal forever: Annie's Mac n Cheese White Cheddar Shells.
-Superpower she would NOT want: Being omniscient. "Sounds exhausting and like it would give you the worst headaches."
-Three things in her backpack (fun edition): Sour Patch Kids, a flask of wh***ey, and her travel watercolor kit.
-One last thing: She's a big-time cat lady! 🐈

This week's artist comes to us all the way from Juneau, Alaska! 🏔️

Kelsey Fagan is the artist behind Elevate Art Studio, where she creates ink and watercolor landscapes inspired by the wild places around her (having the Tongass National Forest practically in your backyard probably helps!).

Interesting tid bit: she never actually planned on becoming a professional artist. She started out in art therapy, where art was always a tool rather than the end goal. Fast forward to today, and she's running her own art business. Maybe art therapy went a little too well? 😂

Oh, and she lives with a giant velociraptor. Well, technically a chocolate Lab puppy. 🦖

Ok, a couple fun facts about Kelsey:
-One meal forever: Sushi. No question.
-Superpower she would NOT want: Clairvoyance. "No thank you. I'd really rather not know."
-Three things in her backpack (warm weather edition): A sarong, a really good knife, and bubbles. Yep, bubbles! She swears they bring people together, no matter where you're from.

Meet our Artist of the Week, Kimberly Costa-Stearns! 👋🏔️

She’s a painter based in Bend, Oregon (represent!), and she's probably best known for repurposing washed up snowboards and giving them a new life. If you're from Bend, you've definitely seen one of these at a coffee shop, outdoor store, or decorating your best friend's mantel.

When Kimberly was 21, she was in a life-changing car accident that severely injured her right arm. She was forced to learn how to paint with her left, non-dominant hand and has painted that way ever since. 🤯 If any of us at the FRE HQ tried to do this, the best we could do is probably a lopsided smiley face or a cracked-out five point star. Mad props!

Ok a couple fun facts about Kimberly:
Superpower she would NOT want: "Reading everyone's mind. A little mystery about people keeps life interesting!"
One meal forever: "Eggplant Parmigiana. I was lucky to visit Italy this summer and eat a lot of it."

Meet this week’s Artist of the Week, Emily Beaudoin.

Emily lives in Canmore, Alberta, where hiking, skiing, biking, paddling, and painting all seem to overlap pretty naturally.

She paints the mountains, plants, animals, ridges, and valleys she spends so much time around, sometimes right there outside and sometimes later from sketches, photos, and memory.

Also worth mentioning: Emily has synesthesia, which means she experiences words and touch as colors. Pretty wild, and pretty fitting for someone who sees the world the way she does.

Meet Carrie Pill, Vermont painter, mountain wanderer, very proud owner of nice handwriting, and this week’s Artist of the Week.

Carrie spends a lot of her time skiing, biking, hiking, and painting the places she finds along the way. She loves working outside when she can, and when she’s not out there, she’s painting from her home studio in Rutland.

A few other important Carrie facts: she loves journaling, is keeping cursive alive, once thought a corporate job might make her happy (for “a hot minute”), and if you ask what belongs in a backpack, her answer is food.

Also, spaghetti forever. 🍝

Meet Hailey Thompson, A.K.A. Watercolorwoods when she has a paintbrush in her hand or generally anytime she's getting creative.

Hailey grew up on rivers and paddled for the US National Whitewater Slalom team before rivers led her to the ocean. She has spent the last decade working as a ship driver and fisheries expert in Alaska, painting from a place of roaring turquoise rivers, powder-coated glaciers, spouting whales and ocean waves.

When she's not painting, paddling, or scrambling in the mountains, you might find her playing the harp, or being terrible at knitting (her words, not ours). 🤷‍♀️

Ok ok so pumped to get to work with her on these gorgeous bags but remember they are only around till next Monday!

Meet Lizzy Dalton 👋

Lizzy is a Portland-based artist, tattooer, and longtime climber whose work is shaped by years spent in the mountains and wild places she loves most.

She’s been climbing for 15+ years, started creating landscapes around 2014, and eventually turned a longtime dream into reality when she began tattooing in 2021.

Also very important: she was once in a movie with Cher when she was six. She’s never actually seen it though. 😂 Ummm Lizzy, are we allowed to know what movie it was?

This week, you can find Lizzy’s Red Rock, Torres del Paine, and Tunnel View artwork on our Artist of the Week feature. Only around til Monday!
