🚴‍♂️Stage 1: Sisters to McKenzie⛰️

Oregon Trail Gravel returns to its roots this year, and legendary Santiam Sandbox is back. 🏜️🏝️The good news? Riders tackle it early in Stage 1, when legs are fresh and spirits are high.

At mile 22.5 for Pioneers and mile 14.5 for Settlers, riders enter the original section of the Historic Santiam Wagon Road. Built in the early 1860s to connect Central Oregon with the Willamette Valley, this route was originally designed for oxen and wagons—not gravel bikes. The road cuts through deep volcanic ash and pumice, creating eight miles of riding, pushing, and problem-solving that have become a hallmark of the Oregon Trail experience.

When riders reach the Sandbox, the field will already be well spread out. The first 6.5 miles uphill present relatively low risk despite the challenging surface. The final 1.5 miles, however, deliver the true Santiam experience: deep sand combined with sharp volcanic rock embedded in the roadbed, creating a memorable one-two punch before reaching smoother terrain. ⛰️

At mile 30.7 for Pioneers and mile 22.8 for Settlers, riders emerge from the historic wagon road onto traditional Forest Service roads. 🌲 Here, the landscape transforms dramatically as the High Desert gives way to lush forests and towering evergreens. The reward is immediate - a long descent toward the Willamette Valley on some of the smoothest and most enjoyable gravel roads in the Pacific Northwest.

For Settlers, only a handful of short climbs remain before a mostly downhill run into Blue River. Pioneers, however, still have one significant climb ahead before Aid Station 3, where opportunities await to collect Crown of the Mountain points or launch a decisive move for the stage victory. 🏆

With more than 2,000 feet of net elevation loss and smooth, fast roads making up nearly 60% of the route, Stage 1 is designed to be quick, exciting, and an unforgettable way to begin your Oregon Trail journey.

The Settler experience is all about the adventure, not the race clock.

While our Course reveal was focused on our Pioneer course (year of the ⛰️🐐), the Settler routes deliver 265 miles of riding and thousands of feet of climbing over five days - this is no easy vacation ride. Though the Settler route is designed to be a more approachable way to experience the magic of Oregon Trail Gravel.

Here's what Settlers can expect over their 5 days on the trail 🚵🏽‍♀️

🏔️Stage 1 – Sisters to McKenzie
Ease into the week with beautiful forest roads, mountain views, and a memorable ride into our first bike camp at McKenzie.

🌲Stage 2 – McKenzie to Oakridge
While the Pioneers continue their assault on Dead Mountain, Settlers enjoy a shorter version of the day while still experiencing some of the best gravel roads in the region.

🏕️Stage 3 – Oakridge
This is wheWhile Pioneer racers battle the Oakridge Time Trial course, Settlers get a well-earned rest day. Explore town, recover, visit with friends, enjoy camp life, or simply put your feet up and prepare for the second half of the adventure.

🚴‍♂️Stage 4 – Oakridge to Gilchrist
The Pioneers will be busy climbing Wolf Mountain and questioning their life choices. Meanwhile, Settlers will enjoy a shorter route that showcases the stunning forests and remote gravel roads winding along the Willamette River that make the Oregon Trail so special.

🏁Stage 5 – Gilchrist to Bend
The final ride home. Fast gravel, beautiful scenery, and a chance to celebrate everything you've accomplished over five unforgettable days. Roll into Bend with new friends, amazing memories, and a tremendous sense of accomplishment.

So if yesterday's course reveal had you nervously checking your gearing choices, take a deep breath. The mountain goat routes are reserved for the Pioneers.
For everyone else, an adventure of a lifetime awaits. 🏕️

🏔️OTG 2026: The Year of the Mountain Goat 🐐

If there was ever a year when climbers have the advantage, this is it. 🔥

Over the past 2 years of , riders with technical descending skills have risen to the top and dominated the competition. In 2026, the race returns to its roots, bringing big mountain climbs back into the spotlight. ✨

For the 1st time ever, will feature a TRUE mountaintop finish 🏁🚵🏽‍♀️ Stage 2's Dead Mountain climb will put riders' climbing legs to the test, while Stage 4 introduces another first: an Hors Catégorie ascent of the infamous Wolf Mountain ⛰️ The climb is guaranteed to take your breath away - from both the exertion AND the spectacular views waiting at the top!

To balance Stages 2 and 4, we've designed a fun, shorter Stage 3 that allows riders to regroup and recover. Stage 5 finishes with a smooth, fast, and relatively short course, offering a welcome respite after Stage 4's leg-breaking route. ⚡️

With numerous new roads making their Oregon Trail debut, the 2026 edition will showcase a fresh look and feel as the event celebrates its 7th year. Stay tuned for closer looks at each stage as we approach race week!
