An Old Town Portland business that bills itself as one of the oldest surviving skate shops in the world is celebrating a major milestone this year — and a brand new owner.
For 50 years, Cal Skate Skateboards has been a steadfast fixture of skate culture in Portland — a city whose buzzy DIY spirit helped earn it the moniker “Skateboarding Capital of the World.” In 1990, local skateboarders banded together to build Burnside Skatepark underneath the eponymous Willamette River bridge.
