Tiny pieces of plastic. Potentially big consequences.

Independent researchers specializing in microplastics, pollution, and toxicology analyzed 30 popular🏆 dog and cat foods🐾, with the findings published in the peer-reviewed journal Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry. Microplastics were found in 76% of the products tested🔬 and 84% of the brands analyzed, including products from brands such as Royal Canin, Pedigree, Nature’s Variety, Iams, Whiskas, Harringtons, Lily’s Kitchen, and Scrumbles. Contamination was found across wet foods🥫, dry foods, value brands🏷️, mid-range brands, and premium brands, although value-priced foods had the highest levels. Some of the most contaminated foods could expose a large dog to more than 2,300 microplastic particles per day or almost a million a year! The most common plastics identified were polyester, polypropylene, polyethylene, and polyacrylamide, suggesting contamination may occur throughout the food supply chain, from ingredients and manufacturing to packaging.

Studies have linked microplastics to gut microbiome disruption, gut barrier damage, inflammation, reproductive issues, and organ dysfunction.

A new review published in Animals, a peer-reviewed Q1 veterinary science journal, highlights growing evidence linking environmental chemical exposure to bladder cancer in dogs. Researchers identified lawn herbicides as a potential risk factor and note that many of these chemicals can be absorbed through the paws and skin, ingested during grooming, and ultimately concentrated in the bladder through urine.

🌧️ Rain doesn’t automatically wash pesticides away. Many are designed to stick to grass and soil long after rainfall.

🐾 Wet grass can actually increase exposure by helping residues transfer onto your dog’s paws, fur, and eventually into their mouth.

⏳ Some herbicides leave residues for days, while certain insecticides can persist for weeks or even months.

⚠️ “Safe after drying” doesn’t mean the chemicals are gone—it simply means immediate contact risk is lower.

To reduce exposure:
• Avoid freshly treated lawns, especially when wet
• Wipe or rinse paws after walks
• Clean wet bellies and fur
• Prevent paw licking until cleaned.

The concern isn’t one exposure, it’s years of small exposures adding up from parks, sidewalks, treated lawns, and other everyday environments.

For many, these products are common in the home and part of everyday life. They contain chemicals such as benzene and xylene are being studied on how they affect our pets. These chemicals can damage DNA overtime, even low level exposure.

I’ve always been skeptical of cleaning products and for about 15 years have opted for making my own or more “natural “ products. However, in the last 5 years at the ranch I’ve learned even some “natural” store bought products have scents our cats react to. We are learning all the time on alternative products or how to make them better all the time.

Chemicals like these can come from cleaners, air fresheners, candles, paint, and more.

Ways to reduce exposure.

• Opening windows to improve ventilation• Using an air purifier • Avoiding synthetic fragrances• Choosing simpler, lower-toxin household products• Eliminating smoke exposure
