The most repeated number in youth sports says 7 out of 10 kids are done with organized sports by age 13. Almost none of them decide on a bad day. They decide in a stretch that looks exactly like the next six weeks.
Here’s the pattern. The season is two weeks old, so the new has worn off. Playing time is getting decided. And Monday, school lands on top of all of it.
Weeks three through eight. That’s the window. It’s when a kid quietly decides whether this sport still belongs to them — or to everyone watching them do it.
You can’t make that decision for your kid. But you can protect one thing: a piece of the sport that stays theirs. The driveway hoop. The wall they kick a ball against after dinner. No whistle, nobody keeping score.
Kids rarely burn out from playing too much. They burn out when every minute of it gets graded.
The five drift signs coaches watch for are in the carousel. Save this one. You’ll want it around week four.
Parents: what kept your kid in their sport through a hard season? Somebody in this county is going to need your answer this fall. 👇
