Honest question:

Why do parents think nothing of spending thousands on select sports, but often balk at martial arts tuition?

I'm genuinely curious.

In our newest blog, we take a deep dive into martial arts pricing, contracts, hidden fees, accelerated black belt programs, and what parents are actually investing in when they enroll their child.

Spoiler alert:

It isn't punches and kicks.

Bring a Friend Week is Here!

This week at AAMA, students are invited to bring a friend, cousin, teammate, neighbor, or homeschool buddy to class and share their martial arts experience.

But here's something many people don't realize...

This invitation is open to the public too!

If your child has been curious about martial arts, this is a great week to come check it out. We know trying something new can feel intimidating, so we're encouraging everyone to bring a friend and experience a class together.

And as an added bonus, it's Street Clothes Week, so guests will fit right in. Just wear comfortable clothes, bring a water bottle, and come have fun.

One thing we hear from parents is:

"I don't know anybody who would actually sign up."

That's okay.

Would we love to welcome new students? Of course. But that's not the entire point of Bring a Friend Week.

Martial arts has had a positive impact on so many of our students and families. This is simply an opportunity to share that experience with someone else. Maybe they start training next week. Maybe next year. Maybe five years from now.

Or maybe they just have a great time trying something new.

Either way, we'd love to meet them.

Message us for class times.

We were trying to put together a list of 10 summer activities in Bellevue and quickly realized Bellevue has way more to do than people give it credit for.

So we created a Bellevue-only summer bucket list. Turns out there are at least 18 family-friendly things to do right here in Bellevue.

A few things on the list:

🦙 Feed the alpacas at City Ranch

🌳 Hike at Fontenelle Forest

🍦 Share ice cream nachos at Dip Cravers

🎳 Bowl at The Alley

🎭 Catch a show at Bellevue Little Theatre

🎨 Take a class at What the Craft

⚾ Watch College World Series teams practice at Roddy Field

🚲 Ride to Bellevue Berry Farm for Taco Ride Night

🥋 Try a Bring-a-Friend Week at AAMA

And quite a few more.

Did I miss anything?

I'd love to hear your favorite family-friendly thing to do in Bellevue.

What do an 8-year-old beginner, a teenager, and a seasoned adult martial artist have in common?

More than you might think.

Before a tournament begins, everyone feels it. The butterflies. The anticipation. The little voice wondering how things will go.

That's one of the reasons we believe competition is so valuable.

The benefits of martial arts competition have very little to do with trophies and everything to do with confidence, resilience, sportsmanship, and learning that you can do hard things.

This summer, every student at our school will have the opportunity to participate in our Intramural Tournament. Some will be stepping onto the competition floor for the very first time. Others have years of experience. Every one of them will be growing.

We recently wrote a new blog about the benefits of martial arts competition and why we believe students of all ages should experience it.

What a fantastic way to honor Memorial Day.

Our first Murph fundraiser brought together first-timers, experienced athletes, parents, kids, and everyone in between to challenge themselves while supporting the 50 Mile March and veteran mental health.

We saw modified workouts, strict workouts, kung fu-inspired modifications, and even an 8-year-old who completed the ENTIRE Murph alongside her mom. It was an incredible day filled with perseverance, encouragement, and community.

Congratulations to our prize winners!

🥋 One Month of Free Kung Fu: Lacey Manhart

🎯 $100 Gift Certificate to Mad Cow Paintball: Krystle Kageyama

🎸 Two Tickets to See Papa Roach at Stir Concert Cove on July 21: Laura Grovum

Thank you to everyone who participated, donated, volunteered, or cheered people on throughout the day. Because of you, we were able to raise money for the 50 Mile March, which supports veteran mental health.

If you'd like to read a full recap of the event, including the story of an 8-year-old completing the entire Murph, check out the blog link in the first comment.

We are already looking forward to doing this again next year.

We had participants from age 12 to age 84 at our last self defense seminar.

So just remember...you can say you aren't interested, or that you're too busy, but nobody can say they aren't coming because they're too old.

(Probably the #1 excuse I hear!)

We had such a great time yesterday doing our own versions of the Murph workout.

More to come about this new annual tradition in our newsletter later...but for now...some pictures and video.
