“Isn’t that amazing?” You can genuinely hear me say in awe of this group of new athletes. Watching their fear before entering their first ever slowly transform into confidence, even elation, was fulfilling. I can relate to these emotions. I was in their “shoes” sometime ago. I understood the terror, the lack of night sleep knowing that tomorrow I will be entering that abyss !

The athlete in this video were mortified and terrified of open water at the start. By mid-session they were in the middle of the lake without even noticing. They even reported they were so elated and having fun! As I have always taught for years “fear is our own creation” they were able to overcome it. Their journey into Triathlon is just beginning, but they are writing their own story . I am just privileged to be a part of it . They have done it. So can you 💪🏽💪💪🏻💪🏾💪🏿

CDA! ❤️🎊💕💪. There’s something about this course that keeps calling me back.

This photo was taken in June 2017, just before I stepped into the waters of Lake Coeur d’Alene for the first time. I didn’t know then how many times I’d return… how many lessons, battles, and breakthroughs this course would give me.🎊

I’ve been back again and again — even taking on the Full IRONMAN here. 💪

This course is beautiful… but don’t get it twisted, it will test you. 😓. Lake CDA can be choppy, cold, and intimidating. But for me, the swim here has always been a privilege — some days smooth, some days tough, all days meaningful.

This June 21st will be my 7th time toeing the line here. And this time, I get to do it alongside my athletes. What a privilege 🙏🏽

Another opportunity. Another challenge. Another chance to elevate. Thank you for being there with me from day one.

I didn’t grow up swimming.

I learned in my 40s.

No perfect stroke.No beautiful catch.No smooth, effortless glide.

What I had?Consistency. Grit. And a refusal to quit.

I had to fight through fear of the water… anxiety… asthma… and the reality of starting later than almost everyone around me. I lined up (and still do) next to athletes who’ve been swimming since they were toddlers—many finishing in half the time it took me just to beat the cutoff.

84 races later…

Train the Whole Athlete — Not Just Parts of One ☹️

In my experience, most age-groupers don’t struggle because they lack fitness.
They struggle because they train in pieces — and rely on guts and glory instead of ex*****on. I am not trying to be a “doom snd gloom” coach - instead, I am the reality-check coach. I speak from over two decades of training and racing experience! Here’s what i learned from all the races I have blown: ⬇️

🏊 Pool fitness means little if you can’t adapt to cold, chop, crowds, and chaos
🚴 Strong cycling is useless if you can’t run well off the bike
⚙️ No professional bike fit = lost watts, wasted energy, and injury risk
🍌 Poor nutrition & fueling = guaranteed fade, no matter how fit you are
🧠 Watts without pacing = blown races

And then there are the DIYs — the little things most athletes skip:
🧩 Mobility work, small stretches, and activation
🧊 Foam rolling and treating niggles early
🛡️ Preparing your body like a warrior prepares for battle

Skip the fundamentals and you race on heroics.
You give 100% effort, and the reward is a way less pecentage of that.

Smart athletes earn the right to suffer late — not early. I tell my athletes - suffer you will, but “learn when to suffer”
Adapt to the elements. Respect the details. Execute with intent.
Save the guts and glory for the last mile, not the first half of your race.

Train for race day — not ego day.😉
