FIXED
onday night, because there was a LOT going on.
We'll start with the pitching, because three guys threw complete-game shutouts in the early slate and it would be a disservice not to lead with that. Brice Carpenter (Moonshot Mafia) went 6.0 innings, struck out 9, and allowed zero runs to beat Chicken & Wiffles 1-0. Josh McCloskey (Tropic Thunder) was even filthier — 6.0 innings, 10 strikeouts, 2 hits, zero runs in a 1-0 win over Wendy Peffercorn. And Robbie Moore (Melonheads) held Iron Hands to ONE hit over 6.0 innings with 8 strikeouts in an 8-0 win. Three shutouts in the same time slot. The hitters around the league were not having a good evening.
Now, Carpenter's shutout was impressive, but it almost got overshadowed by the guy on the other side of it. Joe Havasi went 3-for-3 with 2 walks for Chicken & Wiffles — a perfect plate appearance every single time he stepped in the box — and his team still lost 1-0. Aidan Ayer's solo homer in the top half was all Moonshot Mafia needed, and Carpenter made sure that was enough. Chicken & Wiffles had the better individual hitting performance and walked away with nothing to show for it. Brutal.
The Melonheads game was a different kind of story. Iron Hands gave up 8 runs despite Luke Mukuda striking out 9 guys, which tells you everything you need to know about what Brenden Johnson and Evan Dearwester were doing at the plate. Johnson went 5-for-8 with 2 home runs and 3 RBIs. Dearwester went 5-for-7 with 2 doubles and 2 RBIs. Two guys combined for 10 hits in a single game. Iron Hands pitcher Luke Mukuda had 9 strikeouts and still gave up 5 runs in 5 innings because at some point the hits just kept coming. Moore only allowed 1 hit on the mound, so Iron Hands' night was rough from both sides. They're now 1-5 on the season with a 4-game losing streak.
Over in the Nicaragua vs. DBAP game, Tanner Kremer threw 7 full innings, allowed zero runs, walked nobody, and struck out 6 to get the 2-0 win in extra innings. George Paskal was nearly as good on the other side — 7.0 innings, 9 strikeouts, only 2 hits allowed — but gave up 2 runs and took the loss. Avelardo Tercero hit a homer with 2 RBIs to account for all of Nicaragua's scoring. A tight, well-pitched game that went seven and ended on a margin of two.
The 6:15 slate also had an extra-innings game between Cincinnati Peggers and Silly Nannies, which the Peggers took 6-4 in 7 innings. Brandon Chitwood went all seven for Cincinnati and held on despite walking 6 batters. Brennan Bruner went 2-for-4 with a homer and 2 RBIs, and Xander Bruner added 2-for-7 with 2 RBIs. Silly Nannies got homers from Zachary Kennedy and Brandon Eckert but couldn't get the lead when it mattered. The Nannies fall to 5-1 with their first loss of the season, which still has them in 2nd place — but the Peggers stealing a game from them in extras definitely stings.
Backyard Legends beat T-Flex 3-1 in the early window, and Ryan Rickey was the reason on both sides of the ball. He went 4-for-6 at the plate and struck out 14 batters in 5.0 innings on the mound, allowing just 1 run on 2 hits. Fourteen strikeouts in five innings. Dave Handley hit a solo homer for T-Flex's only run, and the Legends moved to 5-0 on the season heading into the second half of the night.
Then the 7:15 games kicked off.
Backyard Legends made it 6-0 with a 1-0 win over Cincinnati Peggers, with Ben Faulkner throwing a complete-game shutout — 6.0 innings, 4 hits, 0 runs, 5 strikeouts. James Cobb was tough in the loss, going 6.0 innings with 8 strikeouts and allowing just 1 run, but it wasn't enough. Kenny Bradford went 3-for-5 to lead the offense. Faulkner also drove in the only run with a single. Backyard Legends are now 6-0 and not showing any signs of slowing down.
George Paskal turned his rough-luck loss from earlier in the night into something completely different in the nightcap. After throwing 7 innings and losing 2-0 to Nicaragua, he came back out in the 7:15 slot and threw a shutout for DBAP — 6.0 innings, 12 strikeouts, 5 hits, zero runs — to beat Moonshot Mafia 1-0. Two starts in one night, a shutout in the second one, 21 combined strikeouts. Matt Turner drove in the only run. Moonshot Mafia went 1-1 on the night and sits at 3-3.
Tropic Thunder beat Iron Hands 2-1 in the second game to complete a 2-0 night and improve to 3-3. No detailed stats were submitted for that one, but a win is a win and Tropic Thunder now has a 2-game winning streak.
Dave Handley was very busy in the second slot. After homering earlier against Backyard Legends, he came back and threw 6.0 innings with 11 strikeouts, allowing 1 run, to lead T-Flex past Wendy Peffercorn 3-1. Matt Ostrowski went 3-for-5 with a homer, a double, and an RBI for T-Flex. Ray Kallmeyer added a home run and 2 RBIs. Drew Lepine went 3-for-5 for Wendy Peffercorn but it wasn't enough — they went 0-2 on the night and are now 2-4 with a 2-game skid.
The Silly Nannies bounced back from their extra-innings loss earlier in the night by putting up 11 runs on Nicaragua in the nightcap, winning 11-5. Conner Gadbury struck out 13 in 6.0 innings for the win. TJ Graves went 4-for-5 with a homer, a triple, and 2 RBIs. Spencer Fluegel went 3-for-5 with a homer, a double, and 5 RBIs. Tanner Kremer hit 2 homers and drove in 3 for Nicaragua despite taking the loss on the mound earlier — he was 2-for-3 with 2 HRs, 3 RBIs, and 2 walks at the plate. One of those nights where Nicaragua's best hitter and best pitcher were the same guy, and they still went 1-1.
And finally, Chicken & Wiffles closed out the night by shutting out the Melonheads 3-0. Ryan Henry started with 7 strikeouts in 3.0 innings, Ron Ketterer came in and added 7 more over the final 3.0 innings — a combined 14-strikeout performance that held Connor Hambly (4-for-6 on the night) and Evan Dearwester (2-for-5) scoreless. Jim Bryant drove in 2 runs for Chicken & Wiffles. Robbie Moore started for Melonheads and struck out 9 himself, but gave up 3 runs on 3 hits. He threw two games Monday and his night ended with a loss after a shutout. That's a tough 180.
Standings check: Backyard Legends are 6-0 and alone at the top. Silly Nannies are 5-1 and 1 back. Nicaragua is 3rd at 4-2, T-Flex 4th at 4-2. Iron Hands are now 1-5 on a 4-game losing streak and haven't found much to feel good about. Plenty of season left, but the gap at the top is real.
