Questions and comments like these subtly influence our behavior every day.

So think about the people in your life: the things they say, the activities they choose to spend their time on, the foods they eat, etc. These are the reasons why they act the way they do.

If youโ€™re not familiar, Lakitu from Mario and Mario Kart is the little guy on the cloud that picks you up out of the water and puts you back on course.

Like Lakitu, look for the people in your life who pick you up and put you back on track, hold you accountable, and use healthy, positive peer pressure to keep your momentum.

๐“๐š๐ค๐ž ๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐ข๐ง๐ข๐ง๐ : ๐๐š๐ง๐š๐ง๐š ๐๐ž๐ž๐ฅ: You want to train, but your friends are mad at you for skipping a Destiny 2 or World of Warcraft raidโ€ฆ youโ€™re going to skip the workout.

๐‹๐š๐ค๐ข๐ญ๐ฎ: You want to train, and your friends are at the field counting on you for a team workoutโ€ฆ youโ€™re gonna get your butt to the field!

๐…๐จ๐จ๐: ๐๐š๐ง๐š๐ง๐š ๐๐ž๐ž๐ฅ:You are out to dinner with friends and they order lasagna, chicken fingers and fries, a large pizza, and enchiladas. Youโ€™ll likely order junk food to fit in, rather than order a salad and endure their scorn.

๐‹๐š๐ค๐ข๐ญ๐ฎ:You are at a healthy restaurant and all 4 people order salads before you order โ€“ Iโ€™d bet $1000 youโ€™re going to order something healthy too.

๐Œ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐š๐ฅ ๐ก๐ž๐š๐ฅ๐ญ๐ก: ๐๐š๐ง๐š๐ง๐š ๐๐ž๐ž๐ฅ:You have 5 friends who never talk about anything serious: how are you supposed to tell them about your struggles with depression or that youโ€™re thinking about going to see a therapist?

๐‹๐š๐ค๐ข๐ญ๐ฎ:You have 5 friends who are not only accepting of your flaws, but share theirs too and have advice for you.

๐ˆ๐ง ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ๐ข๐ฉ๐ฅ๐š๐ฒ๐ž๐ซ ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ฆ๐ฌ:do you want to be part of a group with 5 newbies that suck at Warcraft and get everybody killed on a raid? Or do you want to be part of a group of 5 rockstars that are 4 levels ahead of you โ€“ that can show you new zones, keep you alive, and make you a better player?

You want the second group! And you want that second group equivalent in life!!

So you need to be surrounded by people that pick you up, not slow you down.

๐๐ˆ๐๐ฌ ๐ค๐ง๐จ๐ฐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ฌ, ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ฒ ๐ฆ๐š๐ค๐ž ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ก๐š๐ซ๐ ๐๐ž๐œ๐ข๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ ๐š๐›๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ ๐ฐ๐ก๐จ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ฐ๐จ๐ซ๐ญ๐ก๐ฒ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ข๐ซ ๐ญ๐ข๐ฆ๐ž ๐š๐ง๐ ๐š๐ญ๐ญ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง.

They often fire their unimproving friends and family โ€“ even if only temporarily โ€“ because they canโ€™t be around negative influence as theyโ€™re trying to build momentum.

Iโ€™ve heard tons of stories where unhealthy relationships have ended because a PIP was dating an unimproving person who didnโ€™t want them to obtain their goals!

๐˜๐˜ฏ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ช๐˜ณ ๐˜ฒ๐˜ถ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ต ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ๐˜ค๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ข ๐˜—๐˜๐˜—, ๐˜ธ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฌ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ธ ๐˜ด๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ง๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ฆ๐˜ด ๐˜ฎ๐˜ถ๐˜ด๐˜ต ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ.

Along with minimizing time around banana peels, they MAXIMIZE their time with Lakitus. Instead of spending time around people who say โ€œyou donโ€™t need to train, youโ€™re good enough as it isโ€ they surround themselves with people who say, โ€œThatโ€™s awesome, how can I help you reach your goals?โ€

PIPs use 20 seconds of courage to strike up a conversation with someone at the building on how to do a certain drill or exercise, and make plans to train together the next day.

PIPs join a network, or start one if one doesnโ€™t exist yet of like minded, goal oriented mates.

If PIPs donโ€™t have people in real life cheering them on, they find an online group that pushes them to be better.

You alone get to choose where your time is spent and who you prioritize.

For the time being, at least until you become a PIP, you might need to sacrifice or fire your friends and family members that are pulling you down.

You might need to have a serious conversation with your significant other that โ€œlikes you more full-figuredโ€ if your goal is to be healthier and happier.

Or diving deep into deflection strategies if you have to constantly deal with family members you canโ€™t fire.

If they are worth your time, they will change their tune to be more supportive and helpful and less of an anchor.

And then start spending time around people who are stronger, healthier, happier, and more successful than you. And do what they do.

Unimproving players might be aware of their Kryptonite, but they just hope and pray they have enough willpower to overcome it every day.

They eat a single Oreo, and then spend an hour thinking about cookies until they go eat a whole sleeve of Oreo cookies and then berate themselves for not having more willpower. They hop on the computer for a quick look at the latest viral and then three hours later itโ€™s too late for their workout.

PIPs know that we ALL have Kryptonite.

We are all flawed superheroes.

Unimproving players try to fix their flaws through sheer willpower and then shame or guilt themselves when they canโ€™t stop their behavior.

PIPs recognize their Kryptonite, and have a plan that doesnโ€™t require willpower to overcome it.

If a PIP knows they have a sweet tooth, they donโ€™t keep cookies and candy at home โ€“ they add more steps between them and the bad habits they are trying to break.

If they know sprinting makes them unhappy, they infuse their baserunning or defense work with built in sprints and remove the temptation to blow them off.

*They donโ€™t go to certain stores or make sure they eat before going out to a movie, because they KNOW theyโ€™ll make a bad decision once they get there.
*They build their environment to not have tempting habits at home โ€“ itโ€™s tough to train poorly when your access to the internet and television is limited.

Unimproving people do motivation wrong, and they let their Kryptonite defeat them. PIPs know their Kryptonite and build systems to deal with it.

Know thyself, my dear friend, and know what your triggers are.

Weโ€™re all flawed; PIPs just plan for their flaws better. These triggers can be environmental or situational or emotional. Know it will happen, and build a Kryptonite-proof plan so you donโ€™t have to worry about avoiding it.

Stop relying on motivation and willpower to tackle your Kryptonite.

Donโ€™t put yourself in bad situations. Build your batcave (your environment) so itโ€™s tougher to make unhealthy decisions and easier to make healthy ones. Donโ€™t go out to dinner at unhealthy restaurants, and schedule early workouts on Saturdays so you wonโ€™t party yourself silly on Friday.

Yes, I realize Kryptonite is Superman and Batcave is Batman, but theyโ€™re from the same universe. Deal with it.

Unimproving Players just starting out have a LOT of inertia to overcome.

Their body is used to sitting on a couch and eating junk food, which means building the habit of training is agonizing. They have to convince themselves to get off the couch and go out into the wilderness. Eating vegetables and healthy food sucks compared to their normal comfort food. Pushing themselves in a lesson sucks compared to โ€œhanging outโ€ on the phone or surfing the net.

But, they use max effort to do these things a few times, and momentum starts to shift away from unimproving and towards improving.

And thatโ€™s when things fall apart.

They get sick or they have homework or an out of season game and they miss a workout. Not the end of the world, right? But then it snows the next day, and one missed workout day becomes two, which becomes 30 in the blink of an eye.

And bam, theyโ€™re back to square one.

Perpetual improvement doesnโ€™t happen in days, or with a few decisions. It takes months (or more likely, years) of consistent effort, so they go all in on momentum until their default behavior is healthy eating and training:

*They train 4 days per week without fail. Yes, even on vacation.

*They do their conditioning every single day, even when itโ€™s snowing.

*They schedule training workouts for early Saturday morning with an instructor so they know they canโ€™t drink like a fish on Friday night with their โ€œfriends.โ€

Because momentum is tough to gain, so you donโ€™t want to lose it.

PIPs are all in on these habits, because they know itโ€™s more than just โ€œmissing a workout.โ€ Itโ€™s killing their momentum, and momentum is crucial to long term Perpetual Improving Players!

Either way, the best investors advise time-tested, long term thinking rather than chasing the fad of today schemes.

You might decide to outsource your programming to a coach, recruit an accountability partner, or buy into a program that creates your training workouts and nutrition for you.

Either way, this is a multi-year process that requires discipline!

Your money, your time, and your effort are all limited resources: how you choose to spend each of them tells me a lot about your priorities.

Theyโ€™ll skip movies out or cancel their Taco Tuesdays to instead prioritize a college training camp and prepare for it.

Theyโ€™re not โ€œwasting their timeโ€ when they invest their time and energy into the right things. They have their priorities in order and spend their limited resources on the most important, most efficient things.

Itโ€™s not what you say is a priority, itโ€™s what you spend your time or money on thatโ€™s a priority. So PIPs prioritize their money and time on the best stuff, even at the expense of other creature comforts.

How much money do you spend on your skill development?

How much time and effort do you devote to creating your training workouts or fine-tuning your nutrition?

Have you ever hired a coach or paid for an online course?

Do you buy programs that make your life easier, or do you try to get by with free stuff that you know you wonโ€™t actually use?

Whether itโ€™s time, effort, or money, if you want to be a PIP you need to invest in yourself with your priorities in order. This might mean spending more for an instructor and canceling your netflix subscription, or preparing your own healthy meals instead of simply ordering out every night.

Youโ€™re not buying a course or a lesson or an overpriced salad. Youโ€™re buying expertise, accountability and momentum.

And NEVER underestimate momentum.

Temporary changes, miserable strategy, temporary resultsโ€ฆ sound familiar?

They hit once or twice a week because theyโ€™re told they should, but they hate it, and the swings lack focus and quality. Or they get dragged to a hitting lesson and the lesson ruins hitting for them because of the mental and physical demands and for the rest of the week the bat sits in the trunk of the car in the bat bag.

They do their best to build the habit, but theyโ€™re so unhappy and unexcited about the training that the habit never sticks.

๐‹๐จ๐จ๐ค, ๐ก๐ž๐ซ๐žโ€™๐ฌ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ญ๐ซ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ก: โ€œ๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐ข๐ง๐ข๐ง๐ โ€ ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐œ๐ค๐ฌ.

So PIPs donโ€™t do โ€œtraining.โ€

Whatโ€™s going on here?

Because training is 90% of the battle, having the habit of exercise and movement is more important than what specific type of exercise you choose.

This means PIPs pick things like gymnastics, parkour, playgrounds, swing dancing, ultimate frisbee, martial arts, hiking just as much as sprinting or strength training. Whatever gets them off their asses and moving!

If thereโ€™s a type of exercise they HATEโ€ฆ they donโ€™t do it. They figure out what vehicle will get them to their destination and use it.

Training goes from something they โ€œhave to doโ€ (ughhhh), to something they โ€œget to doโ€ (yes!).

Now, if a PIP has a very specific goal (TES,40 yard dash, a stronger deadlift, higher throw velocity, etc.), they train for their specific goals and build the body they want and get hooked on improvement: โ€œI canโ€™t wait to go to the field or the building or the barn or the gym and find out how much better I got.โ€

You donโ€™t have to train in a way that you hate. Pick the kind of training that makes you come alive. Donโ€™t have that form of exercise yet?

Try new things! Especially stuff that doesnโ€™t feel like exercise.

All of our drills are designed as templates. You can mix and match and add or subtract to your own preference. Only your imagination will restrict you. Our use of the ๐Œ๐ฒ-๐จ-๐ฆ๐ฒ or the ๐‡๐ข๐ฉ, ๐‡๐ข๐ฉ ๐‡๐จ๐จ๐ซ๐š๐ฒ, or the ๐’๐ž๐ฉ๐š๐ซ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ก ๐‡๐ข๐ฉ turn drills are derived from just one drill. Yet, weโ€™ve adapted them for throwing and hitting. We use a broomstick crafted into a rip trainer for body movement, simple uses of boxes, etc.

Have a specific goal or physique in mind? Train for that goal and get hooked on constant improvement to get addicted to training. You are a video game character increasing your strength attribute with each training session โ€“ thereโ€™s that Groot Mindset again!

Goals like this are cloudy with no real markers of success. With no beacon guiding them, perpetually unimproving players donโ€™t know if theyโ€™re on track, and thereโ€™s no accountability if they donโ€™t succeed. These goals get tossed in the abandoned pile next to goals like โ€œIโ€™m gonna start flossing!โ€

That is very different from PIPs.

*They place the blocks to build that blueprint: a habit-based goal.

This is the goal that a former player set: to reach a specific mph before his junior year of high school, or heโ€™d lose his phone for 3 months to his parents. With a very specific goal and a specific timeline, we can work backwards to calculate how much velocity we need to gain each week to build that blueprint: our goal velocity.

Once a blueprint is selected, a PIP will focus on just placing the next brick or block according to the plans. They know that if they pick the right blueprint, placing one block after another in the right place will eventually result in a completed building.

In Minecraft terms, once you have the blueprints for a replica of Rivendell, all you have to focus on is placing the next block in the right place. Repeat. Eventually, youโ€™ll have Rivendell:

In this instance, a PIP is focused only on the habits themselves, trusting the outcome will take care of itself.

Using block-habits like this results in no wiggle room: You can very easily answer the question โ€œYes I placed the blockโ€ or โ€œno I did not place the block.โ€ You either ate a vegetable today or you didnโ€™t. You either exercised for 30 minutes today or you didnโ€™t.

Pick habits and challenges and goals that are designed for YOUR level. Start with habits SOOOOO easy that you canโ€™t help but achieve them. And focus on the habit.

If youโ€™ve never built a thatched hut, donโ€™t pick a blueprint of a cathedral for your first building. Pick a blueprint that works for you at your level, and complete it! Only then should you pick a bigger, more complex project to follow.

If you do, youโ€™re well on your way to being a PIP!

Whether itโ€™s knowing AND understanding EV control, location, shape, or even keeping a performance journal, PIPs have a rough idea of the quality routine breakdown they train regularly.

After all, GI Joe tells us that โ€œKnowing is half the battle!โ€

The other half is lasers:

PIPs know their use of โ€œRight Nowโ€ accounts for 90%+ of the battle when it comes to hitting, and thus thatโ€™s where their focus is!

Seriously. 90+ PERCENT.

So they do their homework:

If they train the same thing regularly, they spend a few minutes educating themselves about how much they are actually evolving every day.

Understanding Rule #3 - Do only 1 thing.

If they lift, they do some rough calculations to track how muscle gain and speed gain is intertwined and how this workout will affect their performance.

If theyโ€™re worried about snacking at school or a tournament, they do bulk cooking for the week, they know how many calories and grams of protein are in each meal and how to recover from a long day and the best way to prepare for a second or third game in a day.

With each movement tracked, this behavior adds up to a quick mental model of roughly how a PIP approaches their routine each day.

This knowledge allows for shame-free and guilt-free accountability and motivation.

For example, a PIP will know that theyโ€™re going to be eating pizza for a meal after the late afternoon game, so they opt for eggs and bacon for breakfast and a salad for lunch with a chocolate milk to even out their daily nutrition.

Because PIPs also know sugar is a big culprit in spiking insulin and yo- yoing energy levels , they seek to limit sugar intake and make their calories count, especially if those calories are in beverage form.

PIPs are inherently skeptical of marketers and slick instructors, and therefore take the time to look at training routines:

Understanding Movement is King and โ€œHow toโ€ instruction is a fatal flaw.

Understanding the brain interprets a pitch actually being thrown completely different than using a tee and therefore tees are a tool for โ€œFeelโ€ and should be limited in training.

PIPs want the most bang for their buck, so they educate themselves on routines that get results. They measure everything.

Learn about the movements youโ€™re training. Youโ€™re a smart, tech savvy individual, you can take 3 minutes and Google it.

Once you know the composition of your routine, you can start to make subtle adjustments or change quantities over time as you start to approach your goals.

Be okay with โ€œgood enoughโ€ to start, and get more accurate as time goes on.

For each goal, learn the following:
Measure Everything. Find a way to measure movements, reps, time, mph, distance, etc. and note.

Work backwards from the goal to help create your yearly, monthly, and weekly goals.
