Belfast Curling Club

Belfast Curling Club A 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to promoting the sport of curling in Belfast, Maine, and the surrounding community. Cobb and friends from the St.

Belfast Curling Club opened officially in February, 1959 on the site which had previously been flooded for outdoor curling by a group of enthusiasts. Inspired by founder and first president, Dr. Norman E. Stephen, New Brunswick Curling Club, volunteer masons, carpenters, plumbers, electricians, and laborers built the club on donated land - even making their own 5,000 cinderblocks! Before this, the

original handful of "roaring game" fans traveled frequently to St. Stephen, and later carted an assortment of stones to a nearby college hockey rink for early morning ice time. In 1962, the two-sheet ice house was razed to make room for the present three-sheet clubhouse which now provides activities for more than 100 members ranging in age from 16 to 75. A banquet and dance hall was added in 1977. Belfast's Ice: Three sheets of some of the finest ice in New England are the result of extensive renovations made in 1991, including insulation and controlled temperature in the ice house. An experienced committee meticulously maintains our ice using a state-of-the-art scraper and pebbler. Our well-lit ice is in use from November until early April.

The ice is out, and it’s starting to feel like spring around here. It’s time to officially wrap up our curling season with our annual meeting. All Belfast Curling Club members are invited to meet on Sunday, May 3rd at 4pm to conduct the official business of the club, followed by a potluck dinner. During dinner, the Operations Committee will announce the league winners and hand out prizes - you must be present to receive yours!

A meeting agenda will be shared soon. There will be a new slate of directors for the board as well as reports from our various committees and updates on upcoming projects. As a reminder, we need a quorum of 20% of our membership in order to vote so we hope to see many of you there!

See you all soon!

We had an incredible time this past Saturday at our Wheelchair Curling Open House!
It was such a joy introducing new people to the sport of wheelchair curling, sharing some great pizza, and cheering on the Gold Medal Paralympic Curling game together.
The highlight of the afternoon was bringing wheelchair users and non-users together for a fun, competitive game on the ice—what a fantastic way to connect, learn, and play as a community!
We’re excited to host more events like this in the future and continue creating opportunities for people of all abilities to experience the amazing sport of curling. Stay tuned for next season!

The Belfast Curling Club would like to extend our condolences on the passing of Triangle CC member Roy Tew. As evidenced from his obituary, Belfast became Roy’s “home away from home” and held a big place in his heart.
Roy first showed up at the BCC in 2019, a self-proclaimed redneck from Dunn, NC looking to see if he could sub in for a game or two while he was in town. Not long after, his trips to Belfast became longer and more frequent, and his presence at the club grew larger. His smile, charm, and sense of humor delivered in that slow southern drawl were endearing, to say the least. Yes, Roy, you were in fact our only social member from Dunn, NC.
When Roy was in town during our season, he was always willing to help with whatever needed to be done. Whether it was ice crew work, building related projects, clean up, whatever, Roy was there. He also played in several of our annual ‘spiels, bringing up curlers from Durham and exposing them to what Belfast was all about. Many of our members also got to enjoy his company at bonspiels at TSA in St. John, NB, Broomstones CC in Weyland, MA., and the Nashua CC in Nashua, NH. Then, there was always the added bonus of running into Roy at Rollie’s or Darby’s. In general, you would not say Roy was a quiet or reserved man, but it was those times, well, let’s just say you got to see his even more colorful side.
Once again, our thoughts are with his family, friends, and fellow curlers at Triangle. He will be missed here in Belfast, and we did not get to enjoy him nearly as much as you all did. Raise a glass of Jameson – good curling old friend, wherever you are.
