PSA from your friendly local mountain rescue team!

Snow up high is NOT friendly these days, especially on the eastern flanks of the Olympics - it is hard and ice-packed and dangerous. We've been called out on six missions in the last 10 days, with 3 of them on Mt. Ellinor, 1 on the Brothers and 1 on Mt. Rose ... plus, the latest trip reports on Ellinor are not reporting favorable conditions.

PLEASE be careful out there, but if you do get in trouble, do not be afraid to call 911. Other reminders:

* Check your route before you go - Washington Trails Association web site is a great resource (wta.org)
* Always tell someone at home, or a friend, where you're going
* Always take the 10 essentials
* Know how to use your gear
* If you feel uncomfortable on the terrain, it's OK to turn around. The summit will always be there.

Lack of a strong male figure creates a strong correlation in the increased depression, incarceration, and su***de rates of young men. Collin Lomax captured an incredible moment of determination as 2 generations of boaters charged down some tough class IV together. It got us thinking about the role of fathers and positive male role models in young men's lives. Many people come to the river and the outdoors to find peace or healing and for young men it can be a place to prove themselves. As rafters we find a huge amount of acceptance through the camaraderie of our fellow boaters. This kind of psychological support is something that is increasingly lacking in modern society. Ego drives us to prove ourselves, but proving yourself is not about ripping others down. It is about building others up. Our sport, like all outdoor pursuits, is highly ego driven, but if you are an older guy in the outdoors it's important to remember that by setting your ego aside you could actually be saving someone's life. What positive male role model helped guide you on the river and how did their influence make your life better?

Heads up! Hazard on the Main Salmon

! Main Salmon boaters, we have had numerous reports of an obstruction that is ripping boats in the normal river left, low water run in the Big Mallard Rapid. Scouting from the left bank is advised.
