🐐 Meet Emogene Jett! 🐐

Emogene is a 4-year-old Nigerian Dwarf goat, Early’s twin sister, and the official Administrator of GoatCountry LLC.

While Early is the brains of the pair, Emogene is definitely the brawn. She spends her free time training and staying strong—which comes in handy because Early has a way of getting caught up in trouble, and Emogene is usually the one who has to jump in and fight her battles. That’s what sisters are for, right? 😂

Emogene is also the mother of Ezekiel. She had one baby, quickly decided motherhood was not for her, and handed the job over to us. Apparently, managing GoatCountry and keeping Early out of trouble were already enough responsibility! 🤣 Thankfully, we were more than happy to love and raise her sweet boy.

When she isn’t keeping everyone in line or rescuing her sister from her latest mess, Emogene is studying law so she’ll be prepared to defend Early in court someday. With Early, it’s probably only a matter of time. 😂

Emogene is sweet, fun-loving, strong, and just sassy enough to make sure everyone gets the job done. Don’t let her catch you slacking, or you’re sure to get an earful!

Meet Early Ford—our 4-year-old Nigerian Dwarf and GoatCountry’s self-appointed Project Manager. 🐐

Early has the spirit, brains and tenacity to get things done—as long as “getting things done” means bossing everyone around, ignoring personal boundaries and conducting surprise inspections of Josh’s hat and sunglasses. 😂

She does what she wants, when she wants, and she’s probably the only goat who visits the timeout bench multiple times a day. She’s mischievous, rowdy and completely impossible to stay mad at—because underneath all that attitude is one of the sweetest and most loving girls you’ll ever meet.

But Early’s story also has a heartbreaking chapter. A couple of years ago, she was pregnant with twins. One baby was stillborn, and the other was breech. We made an emergency trip—an hour away—to the incredible veterinary team at The Ohio State University. Sadly, her second baby didn’t survive either and had to be surgically removed, but the amazing vets at OSU saved our girl.

After everything Early endured, we decided we would never put her through another pregnancy. Her life and well-being will always matter more to us than having more babies. She gave enough, endured enough and deserves to spend the rest of her life being loved, spoiled and causing exactly as much trouble as she pleases.

Early is our kryptonite, and life at GoatCountry simply wouldn’t be the same without her. 🧡

🍄 Well, apparently we're learning about mushrooms now too…lol!
We love eating and cooking with mushrooms—but only the kind that come properly identified from the grocery store! 😂 When I found these growing at GoatCountry, I had no idea what kind they were.
From what I’ve learned, they appear to belong to the Amanita group, but mushrooms cannot be safely identified from photos alone. Every part matters: the cap, gills underneath, stem, and even the entire base where it comes out of the ground. The younger mushrooms start out round, then their caps flatten and spread as they mature.
Since we have goats, dogs, and children around, we’re treating them as potentially toxic. I wore gloves, carefully removed the entire mushrooms without crushing them, sealed them in a bag, and placed them in the household trash—not the compost. Then I washed my hands and cleaned anything that touched them.
We’ll keep checking the area because removing the mushrooms doesn’t remove the fungus growing beneath the soil, so more can pop up.
We may love mushrooms, but these definitely won’t be making it into dinner! 😂🍄 There is always something new to learn around here!

🐐💼 MEET ELVIRA HALE 💼🐐

I think it’s time you all officially meet my girl, Elvira Hale. ❤️

Elvira is our 4-year-old Pygmy goat and, naturally, she handles Human Resources here at GoatCountry. 😂

From payroll and hay distribution to workplace disputes, Elvira takes care of business. On a normal day in the office, you can find her in a pair of blue jeans, vibing to Stevie Wonder. 🎶👖

Elvira is also a little extra special. She was born with a parrot mouth, meaning her upper jaw extends farther than her lower jaw, giving her an overbite. This can sometimes affect how a goat’s teeth wear, so dental care is especially important. We actually had Elvira at the vet a couple months ago because of a broken molar. 🦷❤️

And those adorable little dangly things on her neck? Those are called wattles! They’re a genetic trait some goats are born with and don’t have a known essential purpose.

Basically, Elvira came with accessories. 😂

But there’s also a reason this girl is SO attached to me...

Because of Elvira, we found out goats can swim! 🤣💦

When she was younger, she was hopping around near our pool and accidentally hopped herself right in. To our surprise, she started swimming! She wasn’t drowning or even struggling to stay afloat. The poor girl just couldn’t figure out how to get herself OUT. 😂

So Mama Cass went in and rescued her from her unexpected swimming lesson. After that, the two of us bonded, and I’m pretty sure Elvira decided right then and there that I was her actual mother. ❤️

She’s been glued to my hip ever since. She follows me everywhere, and listening to anyone else around here is apparently optional. 😂

So there you have her...

🪣🐐 FARM CHORE OF THE DAY: THE NEVER-ENDING WATER BUCKET BATTLE 😂
Keeping fresh, clean water for this crew sounds simple… until you realize how quickly a water bucket can turn into its own little ecosystem. 🌱😳
I’ve tried adding ACV. 🍎
I’ve tried oregano. 🌿
And while I had high hopes… neither one worked well enough to save me from today’s bucket-scrubbing workout. 😂💪
So now I want to hear from my fellow goat people, farmers & homesteaders!
👇 What are your BEST tips or tricks for keeping water buckets clean longer and cutting down on that green/slimy buildup?
Bonus points if it’s safe for the goats, inexpensive, and means I have to scrub fewer buckets. 😂🐐
Because with a whole herd drinking out of these things, I feel like I finish cleaning the last bucket just in time to start over again. 🤦‍♀️😂

At this point, we don't even ask how Esmerelda got her head stuck anymore. 😂🐐

We just sigh, rescue her, and wait for her to do it again.

Anybody else have one animal who is ALWAYS getting themselves into something?! 🤦‍♀️🤣
