Minnowmas Wednesday morning.
Coming from the bait table this morning,
- Hellgrammites ( dobsons).
Hellgrammites are widely considered one of the best freshwater fishing baits available. Highly valued river bait for there squirming action, they are essentially "candy" for predatory fish like river bass (especially smallmouth), trout, panfish, and catfish
They are a giant, soft-bodied protein bomb that fish find irresistible. Though primarily found in streams and rivers, they live under rocks but are poor swimmers, dislodged hellgrammites are easy, natural prey for river fish.
To rig a live Dobson, Hook just behind its hard collar (but not through the main body) using a light wire bait-holder hook. Add a split-shot weight about a foot above the hook and cast upstream, bouncing it naturally along the rocky bottom. Present the bait slowly. Let it hit the bottom and drag it intermittently.
To keep Dobson for future fishing adventures, Store in dry grape leaves and keep in refrigerator or a cool dry place.
But.. handle them carefully! They have strong pinchers and can deliver a painful pinch.
