Weekly Recap of BDR's Monday Night Karting!

Two of our three drivers (Ayden and Justin) were on hand to do battle on the 1/5 Mile of the Beaver Dam Raceway Kart & Junior Sprint Racing track.

Track prep took longer than expected and there was in delay in starting the program. After practice sessions, track staff realized the condition of the track wasn't suitable for safe racing, so Matt Rechek stepped up and volunteered to take the grader back out to blade the rough portions on the track and attempt to pack every down smoothly. It definitely helped as it made the track surface smoother and more racey.

Starting with Ayden's races in the 28🎗️ Godfather Mayhem kart. In Heat 1, he started outside row two in the 4th position, and carefully worked his way up to a finishing spot of 2nd place. During Heat 2, he started inside row two in the 3rd position. Ayden was trying different lines and was working to figure out his cornering techniques. At one point he fell back to 4th, but was able to work his way back into a 3rd place finishing position.

Feature time for Ayden saw him starting on the inside of row four in the 7th position. He drove his heart out, running most of the race in 6th place. He was able to move up to 5th place and was working on passing the 4th place kart when unfortunately, he got pushed out of the preferred line and fell back to a 6th place finish. All in all, we will take it as a win. Every week we see Ayden growing his skills and his driving improving. Though he gets frustrated with how some of the races end, we remind him that he is still doing a great job, and that not every week will be perfect. There will be wins and there will be losses, but that's how you learn and grow into a better driver! Great job Ayden! We are proud of you!

On to Justin in the 17k Ultramax Phaze-X kart. I didn't go out for practice, but took the time to watch some of the other karts and see how they were doing. During Heat 1, I started on the Pole position. Not seeing the track after it was reworked, I wanted to feel out the kart before going all out. I was pacing the field through turns 1 and 2 and coming into 3 and 4 another kart (new to BDR this week) came flying past me on the outside. His momentum took him deep into the marbles, but he was able to keep it on the track. A short time later, the 14t passed me and I spent the rest of the racing following him to a 2nd place finish.

In Heat 2, I started outside row two in the fourth position. All the karts were very closely matched and there was a lot of bumping and pushing. During the race, we saw several positions change. I had moved up into 2nd place and was battling the 73f kart for the lead. I attempted to pass her on the outside and ended up getting loose and spun myself out. The motor stalled and I had to go to the pits to get it restarted. After restarting in last place, I was working my way forward and observing the karts in front of me battle it out. They made contact, which creates the perfect opportunity for me to dive down low to take the lead. There was a late race caution for a kart that spun in turn 4, which ended the race. The flagger waved the black and checkers simultaneously. Not knowing what that meant, we spoke with the track staff, and was told the race had hit the time limit and ended under caution. The black was shown to everyone as a warning to clean up the rough driving.

Feature action had me starting inside row two in the 3rd position. Turn 1 of lap one ended up being the "Big One". Karts in front of me entered the corner too quick, and collided with each other which resulted in the kart originally starting in 2nd place going airborne. The 4th place kart of 14t appeared to be the cause by diving down in front of me and pushing up into the 2nd place kart. Seeing this unfold in front of me, and knowing I had nowhere to go, I jammed the brakes to avoid hitting the wreck in front of me, but that caused me to spin and I got hit by the 47v who also had nowhere to go. Miraculously, my motor stayed running so I was able to clear the accident without losing my position.

As we were lining up for the restart, the 14t who had been checked out by medical staff for a possible arm injury was cleared to return to the race. As he pulled into his position, the flagger noticed a large crack on his seat. He called over one of the other workers and they agreed to send the 14t off for seat repairs. After a quick pit stop, the 14t returned to the track and we were set for a complete restart. The flagger warned everyone that any rough driving would not be tolerated, and next situation would result in a black flag. After taking the green on the restart, I was able to move into 2nd place and followed the 17m of Mary Zellmer for several laps. I kept getting a run on her towards the end of the straightaways but didn't have the position so laid back to avoid contact. I finally got a strong run coming off of turn 2 and got the preferred line going into turns 3 and 4. I was able to make the pass for the lead and never looked back. We finished the race in first place and took our 2nd checkers of the night and our 2nd Feature win of the year.

All in all, it was a very fun night of racing. We will closely look at the karts for damage over the week and get ready for next week's race.

As always, we can't thank our crew Ron Spence and Ron Koenig enough for the help making this program possible. Also thank you for all of our sponsors! There will be pictures to follow in a later post!

I know it's been a while since we have posted an update on our page. So here I apologize for the long post. One of our drivers, Kylie, has stepped away from karting for personal reasons. She did a great job and we had a lot of fun over the years. She just needed some time to be a kid. Beth, one of our other drivers was also out this week, but is eying a return in our next race (June 19th).
In Kylie's absence, I (Justin) have stepped up to race her kart. We came out in week 2 with our original motor and realized it was severely under powered for a grown adult/fat kid like me. Through networking in the racing community, we were able to find a new power plant capable of pulling me around the track, lol. With the help from a great friend, and long time sponsor (Ron Koenig from R.E.E.L. Cleaning Solutions, who has been around since the beginning), we purchased this new motor. This week (week 3) was our first time running the new motor.
In practice, I knew we had made the right decision. This motor was definitely the improvement that we needed. We could tell we had a hot-rod, and it was up to me to tame it. The first heat came around, and I started on the pole. I led the first few laps, but rookie mistakes led me to believe the other karts were hot on my trail, and I found myself committing a racing no-no (looking over my shoulder) far too many times. This mistake proved costly as I drove past my marks, and got too high in the corners, which scrubbed off too much speed. The rest of the pack was able to get by me, and with little time left, I had to settle for 5th place out of 6 karts on the track.
My crew had some, let's put it kindly, "words of encouragement", and more or less told me I was driving like an idiot, lol. So with that in mind, it was time to roll out for the 2nd heat race. I started on the outside of row 1 and by the first turn, I found myself in the lead again, but this was not meant to be, and wouldn't last long. Coming into turn 1 on the second lap, I came in too hot (another rookie mistake), and got too high, and started to go around. As I got into the marbles and nearly around completely, I hit the gas to try to pull out of the spin, the engine revved, but I didn't move. The track crew came over and told me my chain was off. The kart went off on the "Wrecker". In the hot pit area, my crew and I tried to get the chain back on, but realized we had other issues so called it for the race.
Back at the pit, we found ourselves rushing to fix a chain tensioner, which had gotten bent when the chain came off. We decided our best bet was to remove the tensioner, and put a sprocket guard on. After a brief search, I realized we had given our spare away and had to borrow one from our friend Jon Schultz. Installing it was the next issue as we couldn't get a tool in there to change it out. I ended up partially removing the rear axle to give the room needed to get the tools in there. (Thankful for the brief intermission the track had as it gave us the time needed to work on the kart.) We got the kart fixed in time to finish prepping the kart for the feature.
Due to our bad luck in the 2nd heat, we again started the race on the pole. Knowing I needed to do better as a driver, I slowed down my corner entry and heeded the advice from my crew. I lifted early and got passed by the 2nd place kart (Mary Zellmer) before caution flew for a kart that had been spun out (Gracie Flanagan). On the restart, I again chose to take my time, and followed Mary's line before seeing the yellow fly again, for another kart around. Turns out that kart was the same from the first spin, and track officials deemed she was taken out by another driver who received the black flag for rough driving. We restarted the race, and I followed Mary closely until she wiggled, her kart got a little higher up the track, and I was able to get my nose into position to gain the line. Coming out of the next corner, I was able to pull ahead and never looked back. As a driver, this is my first feature win racing go-karts! We hope there are many more to come!
We couldn't do this without all of our sponsors (most of which have been around for multiple years) so thank you all!

Good morning race fans! Mother Nature continues to show her hatred for the Tuesday Night Kart Racing program at Beaver Dam Raceway. Yesterday was no different, with severe weather forecasted for the area, track officials wanted to run a short program, skipping the practice, running only one of the two heats, then going straight to the feature. As the night went on, the weather cooperated and track officials determined we should have enough time to run both heats and the feature.

As we were getting the 17K ready for heat race action, we ran into difficulties getting the kart started. Had to drain fuel from the carb (found water in there upon draining), and we changed the spark plug and it seemed a lot happier. Kart started up and we were ready to rock.

Heat 1, started in the back, finished in the back. Dry, dusty, and slick track had Kylie uncomfortable, and with the high temperatures (heat index was 93°), she just looked like she wasn't into it today. Heat 2, started on the Pole, and fell back towards the rear. Finished 4th out of 5 karts I believe, but she was doing a better job keeping up with the other karts this time. Feature time, saw her starting at the tail of the field once again. Kylie did a good job avoiding some early race cautions and moved her way forward. At one point I believe she was as high as 7th in the 11 kart field. The end of the race saw her I believe in 10th or 11th place. Onto the next race (July 19th), and hopefully cooler temperatures and a tackier track! Kylie tends to do better on those types of tracks.

Ayden and the 28x machine had another great night. In heat one action, he found himself in a 3-way battle for the lead. Unfortunately, he got stuck on the high side, and drifted too high on the track and fell back to 3rd where he finished the race. The second race was a lot better as Ayden quickly took the lead and never looked back. He won his second heat race of the season!

Feature time came and Ayden started at the front. The yellow flag was thrown shortly after the start of the race due to a few karts getting together. After the restart, Ayden continued to hit his marks and lead the race as the karts behind him battled for position. With the end of the race nearing, another caution comes out. Making all of us nervous as this bunched up the field with strong competition on our tail. The green flag dropped, Ayden took off, and didn't miss a beat. Got right back to hitting his marks. As the white flag dropped Ayden was coming up on lapped traffic (the 17k of Kylie being one of them). Ayden was able to weave between the lapped traffic and crossed the finish line first for his SECOND feature of 2022.

Ayden currently sits in 1st place in Championship 🏆 points (2 points ahead of the 99 of Makenzie Maule). Kylie is in 9th place, (16 points behind Ayden).

Tuesday Night Racing Recap!

Tonight was the Opening Points Night for the Beaver Dam Raceway Karting Program!

We arrived to the track tonight with an overcast sky and light sprinkles in the air. With the overcast sky, and the cooler temperatures, the track held moisture all night. It proved to be quite the racey track with a smooth surface and alot grip!

Kylie started off the first Box Stock Heat of the night near the back. Over the off-season, a new kart was purchased, and she took the time to get a feel for the kart. She finished near the back. Heat 2 was a different story. She found some confidence and was in second place and chasing the leader when she made contact with another kart and fell back. There wasn't much time left so she finished near the back. However, between each race we set goals for her and she was excited to try to beat them! For the feature, Kylie started near the tail and was making her way forward. There were a few cautions for spins, and she found herself near the top 5 in an 11 Kart field. While attempting to make a pass, she made contact with the other kart and spun out in turn 3. On the restart, she got right back on the throttle and showed great progress with her recovery after the spin. She even was able to save a "Fish-Tail" coming off turn 4. All in all, a great night for her, as it was some of her fastest laps she's ever had in a kart!

Ayden started his heat near the front. It didn't take too long for him to take the lead and he held on for his first Heat win of the 2022 Race Season. Ayden's second heat saw him starting near the rear. He races his way up to 2nd place and had a great battle, but just couldn't catch the leader so he has to settle for a 2nd place finish. For the feature, Ayden started in P3, and quickly moved into the lead. He endured multiple cautions, but continued to race his butt off! Still leading late in the race, he took the white flag just before another kart spun coming off of turn 4. This final caution ended the race and Ayden was given the checkered flag for his first EVER Feature win!

Both of these kids make me very proud to see them grow, and continue to have fun doing it. The smiles on their faces after getting out of the karts makes it all worth it!

Congrats to all the winners today in all the classes, and a special thanks to all the Volunteers that make this race Program possible. Also, can't forget the sponsors that continue to support us year after year!
