I know it's been a while since we have posted an update on our page. So here I apologize for the long post. One of our drivers, Kylie, has stepped away from karting for personal reasons. She did a great job and we had a lot of fun over the years. She just needed some time to be a kid. Beth, one of our other drivers was also out this week, but is eying a return in our next race (June 19th).
In Kylie's absence, I (Justin) have stepped up to race her kart. We came out in week 2 with our original motor and realized it was severely under powered for a grown adult/fat kid like me. Through networking in the racing community, we were able to find a new power plant capable of pulling me around the track, lol. With the help from a great friend, and long time sponsor (Ron Koenig from R.E.E.L. Cleaning Solutions, who has been around since the beginning), we purchased this new motor. This week (week 3) was our first time running the new motor.
In practice, I knew we had made the right decision. This motor was definitely the improvement that we needed. We could tell we had a hot-rod, and it was up to me to tame it. The first heat came around, and I started on the pole. I led the first few laps, but rookie mistakes led me to believe the other karts were hot on my trail, and I found myself committing a racing no-no (looking over my shoulder) far too many times. This mistake proved costly as I drove past my marks, and got too high in the corners, which scrubbed off too much speed. The rest of the pack was able to get by me, and with little time left, I had to settle for 5th place out of 6 karts on the track.
My crew had some, let's put it kindly, "words of encouragement", and more or less told me I was driving like an idiot, lol. So with that in mind, it was time to roll out for the 2nd heat race. I started on the outside of row 1 and by the first turn, I found myself in the lead again, but this was not meant to be, and wouldn't last long. Coming into turn 1 on the second lap, I came in too hot (another rookie mistake), and got too high, and started to go around. As I got into the marbles and nearly around completely, I hit the gas to try to pull out of the spin, the engine revved, but I didn't move. The track crew came over and told me my chain was off. The kart went off on the "Wrecker". In the hot pit area, my crew and I tried to get the chain back on, but realized we had other issues so called it for the race.
Back at the pit, we found ourselves rushing to fix a chain tensioner, which had gotten bent when the chain came off. We decided our best bet was to remove the tensioner, and put a sprocket guard on. After a brief search, I realized we had given our spare away and had to borrow one from our friend Jon Schultz. Installing it was the next issue as we couldn't get a tool in there to change it out. I ended up partially removing the rear axle to give the room needed to get the tools in there. (Thankful for the brief intermission the track had as it gave us the time needed to work on the kart.) We got the kart fixed in time to finish prepping the kart for the feature.
Due to our bad luck in the 2nd heat, we again started the race on the pole. Knowing I needed to do better as a driver, I slowed down my corner entry and heeded the advice from my crew. I lifted early and got passed by the 2nd place kart (Mary Zellmer) before caution flew for a kart that had been spun out (Gracie Flanagan). On the restart, I again chose to take my time, and followed Mary's line before seeing the yellow fly again, for another kart around. Turns out that kart was the same from the first spin, and track officials deemed she was taken out by another driver who received the black flag for rough driving. We restarted the race, and I followed Mary closely until she wiggled, her kart got a little higher up the track, and I was able to get my nose into position to gain the line. Coming out of the next corner, I was able to pull ahead and never looked back. As a driver, this is my first feature win racing go-karts! We hope there are many more to come!
We couldn't do this without all of our sponsors (most of which have been around for multiple years) so thank you all!
