This course teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude for owning and operating a pistol safely. This course is at least 8-hours long and includes classroom and range time learning to shoot revolvers and semi-automatic pistols.

Students learn NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; pistol parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; range rules; shooting from the bench rest position, and two handed standing positions; cleaning the pistol; and continued opportunities for skill development.

We start in the classroom with SIRT laser trainer non-firing pistols to get the student comfortable with handling pistols and learning the essential skills before going to the range to fire their first live shots.

We furnish the student with loaner SIRT laser training pistols for use in the classroom, as well as loaner .22 caliber semi-auto pistols with ammo for the live fire portion on the range. We also furnish electronic hearing protection for use on the range.

We highly recommend that everyone take this course before attending any other pistol course, including the Texas LTC course. It is suitable for first time novices, as well as intermediate pistol shooters.

* NRA Guide to the Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook
* NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure
* Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet
* Take a Basics of Pistol Shooting Student Examination
* Course completion certificate upon successful completion of the lessons and demonstration of firing a qualifying shot group.

Our Story

With a membership of over 1300 individuals, the club offers its members and their families or guests seven different shooting ranges that enable the shooter to enjoy shotgun, pistol, and small or large bore rifle shooting. Among the ranges are the combined 25 and 50 yard pistol range, the combined 50, 100, 150 and 200 yard metallic target pistol range, the action pistol range, 100 yard rifle range, the combined 200, 300 and 600 yard high power rifle range, and the sporting clays shotgun range. Each shooting range has covered shooting areas for all weather shooting. Earthen berms are constructed downrange to stop bullets. Additional berms are constructed between the pistol ranges for additional safety. The shooting ranges are designed and constructed to enable simultaneous use of all ranges at the same time. The club offers competitive shooting matches for challenging any shooter's interest. Action pistol shooters can enjoy International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA). NRA sanctioned high power rifle matches bring out the best sharpshooter and marksman from around the state. Teenagers can learn gun safety and handling along with acquiring marksmanship skill in the 4-H Youth .22 caliber rifle matches. Hunters will love the challenge of the long range metallic silhouette matches. We also have a women’s program, The Pistolettes. You can find out more about them at GTGC Pistolettes on FB. For the western history buffs, there is even a SASS western cowboy single action shooting match where competitors dress in clothes of the 1800's, complete with cowboy hats, vests, chaps, and of course, six-shooters! This match continues to grow in popularity and is lots of fun. Whatever your interest, a competitive shooter, hunter, action shooter, casual plinker, or western cowboy, there is a shooting range available to suit your style. Rifle, pistol, or shotgun, for a variety of ammo types such as blackpowder, rimfire, and centerfire.
